Milestones in Climate Protection

2001: Deutsche Post DHL sets up a corporate environmental team in recognition of the growing importance of environmental issues.
2002: DHL Sweden launches “Grøna Ton” (Green Tonnage), our first ‘green’ value-added transport service to promote renewable fuels.
2005: DHL Parcel Germany pilots its “Grüne Paket” (“Green Parcel”), a carbon neutral parcel shipping service.
2006: Carbon neutral shipping services become available to DHL Express customers in several European countries.
2007: Carbon neutral shipping service is launched for retail and business mail customers in Germany.
2008: With its GOGREEN program, DPDHL is the first logistics provider to commit to the 2020 target of curbing CO2 output by 30%.
2008: DHL Supply Chain has the UK’s first carbon neutral warehouse installing a ground source heat pump and new electric lighting.
2009: Deutsche Post DHL ships over 700 million GOGREEN products, offsetting 38,600 tonnes of CO2 in climate protection projects.
2010: The number of annual GOGREEN shipments climbs to 1.7 billion.
2010: The GOGREEN service is also made available to DHL Global Forwarding customers around the world.
2010: DHL Freight begins to offer Carbon Reports in certain regions. Customers can offset their emissions based on these reports.
2011: DHL Global Forwarding, Freight introduces Carbon Dashboard, a online reporting tool to show customers their CO2 emissions.
2011: DHL Parcel Germany now ships all parcels from private customers carbon neutral at no extra charge.
2011: To obtain emission-offsetting certificates, Deutsche Post DHL launches its own climate protection project in Lesotho.
2012: Carbon neutral shipping services are now available to DHL Express customers in approximately 60 countries around the world.
2012: DHL Express launches externally verified reporting services: Customers can now track the CO2 output of their shipments.
2014: The focus of GOGREEN is widened. From reporting to offsetting we now also take other greenhouse gases into account.
With our green solutions we help our customers to reduce their environmental footprint. This is not only good for the environment, it is also a recognized competitive factor: In the face of climate change and the harmful effects of global warming, consumers increasingly consider environmental issues in their purchasing decisions. This is why many of our business customers have introduced climate protection goals.
With our global presence and our expertise, our business sectors can support them in achieving these goals. Our portfolio ranges from individual climate neutral shipments for private customers to the optimization of multinational corporations’ entire supply chains. Environmental protection is an integral part of our Group strategy: Back in 2008, we introduced a measurable climate protection target – and were the first logistics provider to do so. By 2020 we want to improve the carbon efficiency of our own transport services and those of our subcontractors by 30 percent compared with the base year 2007. We have taken this approach because we view environmentally friendly and efficient logistics as an opportunity to create value – for our environment, for us as a company and for our customers.

GoGreen is not only the name under which Deutsche Post DHL offers environmentally-friendly products and services to its customers, but it is also the name for the company’s global environmental protection program. In November 2013, Deutsche Post DHL was the first logistics provider to receive the ‘GREEN BRAND Germany’ seal for its GoGreen program, launched in 2008, with its ambitious climate protection targets and its green products and services. The prize is awarded by GREEN BRANDS, an international, independent organization based in Ireland.

Six years ago, DHL Supply Chain and the Japanese technology group launched a partnership to support Fujitsu in reducing its environmental impacts and improve the carbon efficiency of its logistics operations. The aim is far-reaching: Optimized transport routes and the improved use of loading capacities are two focal points; the recycling of packaging and the introduction of more efficient tires by transport partners are another.

All together, Fujitsu’s CO2 emissions have been cut by nearly 50 percent. The concept has been honored with the Green Logistics Award presented by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

In 2007, a big packaging producer began to use GOGREEN for all express shipments sent from Sweden. This amounts to an average of 70,000 shipments each year. DHL offsets the greenhouse gas emissions created by transports and shipment handling with investments in certified climate protection projects.

Through GOGREEN, we contributed to a worldwide climate goal of this company: Lowering CO2 emissions by 10 percent in absolute terms by 2010 from their level in 2005.

Optimized Ocean Freight

Optimized Ocean Freight Routes

In Australia, a big technology company joined forces with DHL to cut its CO2 emissions by more than 40 percent. As part of this effort, the container trans-shipping center was relocated from western Australia to the eastern part of the country in 2008.

The change eliminated the need for many ground transports. In addition, the utilization rate of commercial vehicles was significantly increased. These improvements not only help the environment, but also save money.

Inland Waterways

Inland Waterways

In 2009, a pharmaceutical group cut the CO2 emissions associated with the pre-carriage of ocean freight by 30 percent in Germany.

To achieve the reduction, DHL Global Forwarding shifted the transport of temperature-sensitive products bound for ocean freight export from road vehicles to inland-waterway vessels: The containers are now loaded onto a ship to transport them to ocean ports located in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. As a result, 11 fewer kilograms of CO2 are generated per ton of transported freight.

Rail Transport

In 2009, DHL devised an environmentally friendly concept for a producer of household appliances.

Thanks to this concept, more than 13,000 containers arriving annually at the sea ports in Germany can be carried by train instead of road vehicles to their final destination. This eliminates nearly 120 road transports each week. CO2 emissions have been reduced by 60 percent, but transit times remain unchanged.

Standard Chartered Bank is the first financial institution to use DHL’s GOGREEN service around the world.

Under an agreement signed in 2011, 95 percent of the bank‘s international courier services are to become climate neutral in a step-by-step process. The greenhouse gas emissions created by transports and shipment handling will be offset by investments in certified climate protection projects.

Teardrop Trailers

Teardrop trailers

Marks & Spencer, one of the UK’s leading retailers, aims to become the world’s most sustainable retailer by 2015. The company partnered with DHL to improve transport management and fuel efficiency.

As a result nearly 400 aerodynamic Teardrop trailers have been added to the fleet. A Control Tower approach helps to reduce the number of miles driven to a minimum. Also, a special container frame developed by DHL enables M&S to transport hanging garments by rail, resulting in additional carbon savings.
