Fashion Gaining Speed in Mumbai

Just wrapping up in the Indian Hollywood, Mumbai's Winter/Festive 2012 collections showed just how far the metropolis's designers have come and how quickly they're moving forward.

While Mumbai remains a relative newcomer on the global scene, designers across India have a long tradition of creating luxurious textiles and using a vibrant palette to bring the female form to life. These talents were well on display in the Winter/Festive 2012 collections, a more colorful and unique style showcase than anything we've seen around the globe.

Award-winning New Dehli-based design duo Shivan & Narresh had an especially notable showing with their stitch-free made-to-measure swimwear and flowing sari-style cover-ups. Trained in lingerie and leather craftsmanship, the duo have an undisputed eye for detail that make their hand-crafted bikinis, maillots and tankinis stand out.

As a proud supporter of up-and-coming designers looking to branch out around the world, DHL was happy to support the designers as they took to the catwalk last week. They put on quite the show, taking on the DHL Speed of Yellow campaign to create a futuristic laser-lighted backdrop with hints of speed in the mythological horse figure of Equus, whose image appeared subtly across the collection.

Frozen Fragility Designs

While speed might be a good descriptor for shooting star Swapnil Shinde's career track, the classic designs he presented onstage were anything but fast fashion. Already a favorite among celebrities and the jet set in India, Shinde creates a sexy elegance that is neither cheap nor boring. Displaying his take on the theme “Frozen Fragility,” the designer had a new take on the ultra-mod 50s and 60s with cinched waistlines and voluminous skirts in a primary color palette.

With just a bit of Indian flair coming across in the belted saris, Shinde helped to share the Lakme Fashion Festival's vision to integrate India into the global fashion world.

At DHL, we're happy to support the Lakme Fashion Week as they realize that vision and bring Indian fashion to the rest of the world. To find out more about DHL's role in the Mumbai Fashion Week events, like the DHL Lakme Fashion Week Facebook pageExternal Link / New Window.
