Spotlight on: We Are Handsome
Brief Bio: The design duo Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Jules Somers combined their talents to debut We Are Handsome in the summer of 2009. Based in Sydney, the pair's creations are all designed and sewn in Australia. That hasn't stopped them from making waves globally, however, as stockists from as far afield as Barneys New York can attest.
Big Break: Great designs and a solid plan for expanding the business abroad helped We Are Handsome score DHL Australia's Export Scholarship in 2011. Aimed at helping emerging designers get their feet on the ground overseas, the scholarship includes not only a shipping credit but also offers consultations on the export process, customs processing, and e-commerce issues.
“Winning the DHL Fashion Export Scholarship has enabled us to ensure that taking the brand beyond Australia is done safely and with ease. Exporting is a detailed and crucial part of any international business and the support and mentoring from the DHL Express team has been absolutely invaluable and has taught us more than what we could have done going it alone,” said Somers.
“I would strongly urge any designers with international dreams to enter. It has been one of the best decisions we have made,” added Somers. One half of the duo also sat on the board of judge for the 2013 contest, whose finalists have just been announced
The Look: We Are Handsome gives shape to the pair's desire to create spellbinding works of art in the form of swimwear and beach accessories. From animal-print maillots to palm tree-laden two pieces, the suits reflect not only Australia's natural elements, they also capture the laid-back surf spirit of the country's coast.
Next steps: The support We Are Handsome received from the DHL Fashion Export Scholarship only got the awards ball rolling. In addition to being highlighted at several Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festivals in Sydney, including the shows in August 2013, the duo have been nominated for the 2013 WGSN Global Fashion Awards, which honor “inspiration and innovative individuals and businesses” who push the fashion boundaries on a global scale. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in October. Big plans for a debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim in Miami in 2014 are also in the works.
