Winning in Sydney

The shows have wrapped at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Sydney, but the adventure is only just beginning for the winners of the 2013 DHL Fashion Export Scholarship

The big news coming out of Sydney during the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival held in August was not only the debut of the Kardashian Kollection, but also the first appearance of baby North West, whose mother Kim Kardashian had her hand heavily in the new clothing line's design process. With its eager reception of young designers and relaxed attitude, Sydney proved the perfect launching ground for the women's line of casualwear.

Though heads turned at both the runway event and the infant's appearance, the Spring/Summer 2014 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Sydney portrayed the city's laid-back feel and flair for dressed up casual with a lot of grace, never getting too worked up about the celebrity appeal. It's this attention-to-detail mixed with a casual, ready-to-wear appearance that gives Australian designers great potential in the global market.

Sydney evidences a desire to keep it real, showcasing talented designers whose garments could be worn every day, whether to work or to the beach. Brands like We are Handsome and Blesse'd are the Meek feature inspiring fashion out on the runway, while Easton Pearson and Emma Mulholland, offer ideas to give wearers an extra kick.

It's also the place where emerging designers get their feet firmly on the ground before rocketing to success abroad as part of the annual DHL Fashion Export Scholarship competition. Even before the winners are announced in September, the finalists all garnered media attention that will surely set them on the path to bigger, greater things.
