Lotus drive Kimi Räikkönen turned some heads with his unexpected victory at the season opening Grand Prix™ in Melbourne last weekend. The Finn’s strong performance also yielded him the day's fastest lap, setting the tone for what is sure to be a tight race for the 2013 Drivers’ Championship and DHL Fastest Lap Trophy.

Formula 1 engines roared for the first time in the 2013 season at this year’s opening Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15-17. After reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel dominated the qualifying rounds, the Red Bull Racing driver had to settle for a disappointing third place off the pole position. Team Lotus driver Kimi Räikkönen – aka the “Iceman” – unexpectedly topped the podium and took this year’s first Fastest Lap.

The Finn drove exceptionally well on a two-pit strategy that surprised the other teams. Given the fact that managing this year’s more wear-prone Pirelli tires is expected to be a game-changer in 2013, Team Lotus is off to a fantastic start.

DHL Formula 1 Expert Christian Danner had this to say about the Iceman’s opening Fastest Lap: “The way Kimi managed it was impressive – very much in Vettel style – he raced tactically in the end, keeping everything under control and then accelerated again just before the finish. And on relatively worn tires, too. That performance is not to be underestimated and it shows me that we can expect Kimi to be in contention for the Fastest Lap Award throughout the year.”

Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Sebasitan Vettel joined Räikkönen on the podium in Melbourne while Lewis Hamilton ended his silver arrow debut in fifth. Topping the Constructor’s table is Ferrari, thanks to Felipe Massa’s fourth place finish. Then come Lotus, Red Bull, Mercedes and Force India.

“I just have to win more races and be more higher up to fight for the championship, but that’s how I am, but is it going to happen, there’s no promises on that. We hope we can achieve those results,” said Kimi after the race.
