With mounting pressure in his debut season, Sauber driver and Formula 1® rookie Esteban Gutierrez puts in a solid performance in Barcelona and takes the first Fastest Lap of his F1® career.

21-year-old Esteban Gutierrez of Team Sauber said his strong run at the end of the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPAÑA 2013 was “like a victory.” The effort earned him the DHL Fastest Lap but left him in 11th place, finishing only three tenths of a second off the points.

After starting from 19th on the grid due to a grid penalty, it was the best finish of his debut season and his first Fastest Lap in Formula 1.

Like a victory
“We came to the fifth race trying to get a point, but in the end [11th] was what we could get and even though we didn't get a point, it feels a little bit like victory,” Gutierrez told reporters afterward.

It was an all-around solid performance for the young Mexican that didn’t go unnoticed by his team. “No mistakes, good pit stops, good racing – we are pleased with him," said Sauber’s chief designer, Matt Morris. “We couldn’t have asked for much more from him.”

Gutierrez actually led the race for a few laps early on – another first in the rookie’s career.

The Fastest Lap came 10 rounds from the finish on fresh rubber and marked the beginning of a flawless run of fast laps that saw him slowly reel in Daniel Ricciardo of STR-Ferrari. The Sauber driver completed the 4.655 km circuit in 1:26.217 on lap 55.

A surprise

The result certainly turned some heads. DHL’s F1 Expert and former F1 driver, Christian Danner, had to look twice himself. “Nobody expected him, the rookie, to set the Fastest Lap during this Spanish Grand Prix.” Watch Danner’s review and race footage of Gutierrez’s fastest lap above.

Eyes will certainly be on the Sauber driver in Monaco in less than two week’s time. His result in Spain might not make him a favorite any time soon, but with one Fastest Lap under his belt, he can certainly contend for fastest man honors – and just maybe score some points in the process.

The standings
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso’s home win and a second place for iceman Kimi Räikkönen has tightened things up at the top of the drivers’ standings. In the constructors’ table, Ferrari have pushed past Lotus, while Red Bull remain in the lead.

Esteban Gutierrez joins the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Räikkönen and Sergio Pérez on the DHL Fastest Lap leaderboard. Vettel leads the group with two Fastest Laps, which he raced in Shanghai and Bahrain.

Danner’s tip for Monaco

And stay tuned for more tips and reviews. Before and after each Grand Prix this season, Christian Danner will offer up his fastest lap pick and then review that perfect lap after the race. “One thing that is so cool about the fastest lap,” says Danner, “is that there’s always a story behind the story.” Christian shares that story each week and you can have a look back at his past picks and reviews at any time here or at DHL's YouTube channelExternal Link / New Window
