Action-packed Formula 1® season set to begin

The annual pre-season tests at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona this past month have given Formula 1® fans around the world a first look at the new cars and drivers. The stage is now set for what is sure to be another exciting season of Grand Prix action – the 64th season of the Formula One World Championship and DHL’s ninth season as Official Logistics Partner. Stay tuned as DHL not only delivers to the race track, it also delivers an online F1 experience to fans around the world.

In 2012, fans were kept on the edge of their seats right to the finish as they watched Sebastian Vettel and Team Red Bull Racing win the proverbial F1 hat trick: the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships plus the coveted DHL Fastest Lap Trophy. DHL and Formula 1® just announced an extension to their global partnership, a deal that sees DHL remaining the exclusive Official Logistics Partner for motor sport’s elite competition and continues a longstanding partnership that officially began in 2004. Our familiar yellow and red will be trackside again at many of this year’s races. Get the press release here

With the last-minute inclusion of the German Grand Prix at the historic Nürburgring, the 2013 season is set and will include 19 races in all. Eleven teams and 22 drivers will compete this year – one less than last year with Team HRT dropping out for financial reasons. The annual driver shuffle has both fans and pundits talking up a storm. Michael Schumacher’s retirement and 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton’s move to Mercedes were two of the most-talked-about changes. Former F1 driver and DHL Ambassador, Christian Danner, says that of the new drivers on the F1 stage this year, Team Williams driver Valtteri Bottas will be one to watch. We’ll certainly be watching to see if the young Finn has what it takes notch up a fastest lap this year.

The cars aren’t too different from last year though everyone was certainly keen to take a first peek at the pre-season tests in Spain last month. “There were no real surprises when they rolled out the cars from the trucks for testing, just a few little design varieties,” says Danner. “It doesn’t really matter what the car looks like, it matters how fast the car can go. At this point the answer to this question is a bit tricky, simply because the conditions in Barcelona were very bad, the weather was really cold. The tire performance is hard to assess in these conditions. So the results of the testing are pretty inconclusive.”

The cars officially start their engines this season at the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 14-17, with the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang a week later on March 22-24.

DHL delivers
After eight adrenaline-pumping years as Official Logistics Partner, DHL has a proven track record for getting F1 onto the starting grids around the world. DHL is trackside once again for the ninth consecutive season, racing against time as we match the speed, precision and teamwork of a well-oiled F1 team to deliver the fastest and most efficient logistics in the business. Specialized DHL units coordinate Formula 1’s transport needs, ensuring that we cross the finish line before the cars roll out onto the grid.

Formula One Management continues to partner with DHL because of our some 25 years of experience in motorsports logistics. “We are very pleased to be continuing our winning partnership with DHL over the coming seasons,” said Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One Group CEO.

“Formula 1 prefers DHL for our experience, our global network, and our understanding of what goes into the logistics. Our staff has an average experience of 15-20 years. I think we are a perfect combination,” adds Pier Luigi, DHL Motorsport Deputy Managing Director.

DHL delivers hundreds of tons of racing and hospitality equipment by road, ocean and air and provides “fast-lane” customs clearance for overseas shipment of race cars, engines, tires & spare parts. We also transport the racing fuel, which is quite a delicate process. At the track, DHL provides a 24-hour service covering everything from the delivery of parcels and documents to customs services and shipments. The F1 teams can also utilize DHL’s vast global network to pick up and deliver at any race circuit in the world.

Fastest Lap
As Official Logistics Partner, DHL recognizes those qualities on the track that mirror its behind-the-scenes efforts, namely the speed, precision and teamwork it takes to pilot the Fastest Lap. While F1 drivers are out on the circuit pushing the envelope for the perfect lap, DHL is navigating the global logistics race track, steering through the tight twists and turns of international trade routes with F1 precision and speed and managing customs clearance with an efficiency any pit crew would be proud of.

Since 2007, DHL has been honoring this new standard of speed with the DHL Fastest Lap Award. One driver sets the fastest lap at each race, with the award going to the pilot who sets the most over the season.

DHL was proud to award the 2012 DHL Fastest Lap Trophy to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel at a special ceremony at the final race of the season in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Read more about this record-breaking year
