The Need for Speed Formula 1 starts engines in Australia

The 2012 Formula 1™ season got off to an exciting start in Melbourne, Australia, this weekend, which saw McLaren driver Jenson Button pilot the Fastest Lap and take the checkered flag. The new season and new racecar specifications bring a new level of speed, precision and teamwork, and DHL – the Official Logistics Partner of F1 – is going to make sure you know who is the fastest driver on the racetrack each week. Stay tuned, it’s going to be one heck of a ride!

The 2009 World Champion Jenson Button claimed his third Australian Grand Prix victory in four years at Melbourne’s famed Albert Park Circuit yesterday. The McClaren driver – whom many have picked to win this year’s championship – raced a brilliant race from start to finish that included the day’s Fastest Lap.

Button wowed the crowd right off the starting grid, pulling past teammate and pole sitter Lewis Hamilton into the first corner – and there was no looking back. By the end of lap 5 he had piloted five consecutive fastest laps and built a three-second cushion ahead of Hamilton. After commanding the gap for most of the race, the Englishman fought off Red Bull driver and 2011 World Champion, Sebastian Vettel, in the race’s final laps after the German Wunderkind managed to close in on him after a tactical decision to stay out on the track when the safety car came out in lap 37 allowed him to squeeze between the two McLarens.

Button reopened the gap with another series of brilliant fastest laps that culminated in the Fastest Lap of the race in lap 56 – a performance that put him over the finish line over two seconds ahead of Vettel and four seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Fastest Lap
As Official Logistics Partner, DHL recognizes those characteristics on the track that mirror its behind-the-scenes efforts, namely the speed, precision and teamwork that go into producing the Fastest Lap. This weekend in Melbourne, Jenson Button and Team McClaren showed fans around the world just what happens when it all comes together.

Since 2007 DHL has been defining a new standard of speed with the 'DHL Fastest Lap Award'. One driver sets the fastest lap at each race, with award going to the pilot who sets the most over the season. Winning requires pure speed – something DHL, as the world's leading logistics provider, uses to achieve its goals, shortening international routes, facilitating global trade and making the world a smaller place.

DHL delivers
After eight adrenaline-pumping years as Official Logistics Partner, DHL has a proven track record for getting F1 onto the starting grids around the world. This year DHL will be trackside once again, racing against time as we match the speed, precision and teamwork of a well-oiled F1 team to deliver the fastest and most efficient logistics in the business. DHL delivers hundreds of tons of racing and hospitality equipment by road, ocean and air and provides “fast-lane” customs clearance for overseas shipment of race cars, engines, tyres & spare parts. We also transport the racing fuel, which is quite a delicate process. The F1 teams can also utilize DHL’s vast global network to pick up and deliver at any race circuit in the world.
