Tight Season Continues – Five Top Pilots in Five Races

Five races, five winners, five fastest lap drivers – the 2012 Formula 1™ season has yet to see one driver stand out from the rest. This week F1 fans were treated to the maiden Grand Prix victory of Team Williams driver Pastor Maldonado and a Fastest Lap duo from Team Lotus.

Team Williams driver Pastor Maldonado races to maiden Grand Prix victory at the Formula 1 Gran Premio De España Santander 2012 in Barcelona.

Just two weeks ago in Bahrain, Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel said, “It's a very tight season. The cars are very close to each other. Small things can make a huge difference.” The Formula 1 Gran Premio De España Santander 2012 did not prove him wrong. The fifth race of the season saw the fifth driver top the podium and notch up a fastest lap.

At the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona this past Sunday, the day belonged to Team Williams' number one pilot, Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado. It was the young driver’s first-ever Grand Prix win, and a well-deserved one. He ran a nearly flawless race, keeping his nerve at the end to fend off a charging home favorite Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, who would place second. The display is certain to dispel some of the criticism his driving has received in the past.

Fastest Lap

The Team Lotus duo of Romain Grosjean and Kimi Kaikkonen ran the two fastest laps of the race, with Lotus’ number two pilot, Romain, outpacing his teammate by over a half second with a lap time of 1:26.250 in Lap 53. With a fastest lap each in the bag, and after joining Vettel on the winner’s podium in Bahrain and then placing third and fourth in Barcelona, Team Lotus just might be the one to watch in the race for the DHL Fastest Lap this year.

As it stands, McLaren’s Jenson Button, Ferrari’s Kamui Kobayashi and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel all share one fastest lap apiece with their Team Lotus counterparts.
