DHL likes Lotus’ speed!

Though 2011 Fastest Lap Champ Mark Webber took the checkered flag at the 2012 British Grand Prix, Team Lotus were the day’s speedsters, racing the two fastest laps.

An unusually sunny day at the famously wet Silverstone circuit made for one of the most exciting Formula 1™ races thus far. The end of the British Grand Prix was as thrilling as ever, with fans on the edge of their seats as the world’s best pushed the envelope with each passing lap.

While the lead changed hands with just four laps to go, giving Red Bull driver and 2011 Fastest Lap Champ Mark Webber the checkered flag, the Lotus duo secured their own bragging rights two laps later by racing the day's fastest laps.

Lotus driver Kimi Räikkönen once again maintained a noteworthy pace in the closing laps of a F1 Grand Prix. The Finn drove the DHL Fastest Lap in 1:34.661 in Lap 50 with only two laps to go, crossing the finish line in fifth place overall and a mere second behind fourth-place finisher Felipe Massa of Scuderia Ferrari.

Teammate Romain Grosjean piloted a remarkable race of his own, climbing from last place to end the day in sixth. In the process he raced the second fastest lap of the day – also in Lap 50, just two-tenths of a second behind Räikkönen. After his extraordinary comeback from the back of the grid, the Frenchman reminded everyone how important teamwork and true grit are: “The team did a fantastic job in giving me a great race strategy and we believed in ourselves to go for long stints with both sets of hard tires.”

Team Lotus continues to demonstrate that they have the capability and the passion to be the fastest cars on the track week in and week out. Could they give Red Bull a run for their money? With Räikkönen in fifth place in the drivers’ standings and the team tied for second with Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, they’ve certainly positioned themselves to do just that.

Stay tuned as we continue to report on the tight race to the 2012 DHL Fastest Lap. Keep up with the action and get your backstage pass to F1 at Formula 1 Backstage by DHLExternal Link / New Window.
