Nico Rosberg Pilots 2nd Fastest Lap of 2012

Repeating his performance in Valencia, the Team Mercedes driver grabbed his second Fastest Lap of the year while launching himself into seventh place in the final laps.

Team Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg found himself in a familiar position at the beginning of the Formula 1 Gran Premio Santander D’Italia 2012. Just five laps into the Grand Prix, the young German had fallen back seven positions to thirteenth. The scene was reminiscent of the Spanish Grand Prix in Valencia, where he also made a poor start. But it was also on the Valencia Street Circuit that Rosberg didn’t give up after an early setback, keeping himself in the race and ultimately putting on a brilliant late-race performance to finish a respectable sixth and notch up his first Fastest Lap of the 2012 season.

Rosberg’s Italian race went south as soon as the lights went out and the cars roared off the grid. At the end of Lap 1, he had dropped from position six to ten. After failing to overtake Bruno Senna in Turn 1 of Lap 2 and rubbing the Brazilian in the process, the Mercedes driver fell even further back to position thirteen, where he would stay much of the race.

Late in the race, Rosberg came off his second scheduled pit stop fired up to finish in the points. One by one, he aggressively picked off slower drivers on his fresh tires, trading fastest laps with Sauber’s Sergio Perez, who was chasing down race leader Lewis Hamilton and would go on to place second. Rosberg didn’t let up and raced the final 5.793 km lap in 1min 27.239sec. Perez completed the same lap in 1min 27.562sec.

It’s a simple lesson that the best of the best teach us every day. Never give up. It’s that type of commitment that DHL values. It inspires us to stay on track in the never-ending logistics race.

In the 2012 race for the DHL Fastest Lap, Rosberg now finds himself in a very positive position: alongside Lotus driver Kimi Räikkönen with two Fastest Laps and in striking distance of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
