Red Bull One-Two

Mark Webber takes fastest lap and second place in Korea while teammate Vettel takes the win and the overall championship lead.

This past weekend at the Korean Grand Prix in Yeongam, Team Red Bull scored its first one-two finish of the 2012 season – the 12th in team history. Although Mark Webber started the race on pole, teammate Sebastian Vettel shot down the inside into Turn 1 as soon as the lights went out to take the lead – a position the reigning F1 champion held for the rest of the day. The German has now led the field from start to finish in two consecutive Grand Prix races.

Red Bull’s number two certainly had good day himself. Webber, who won the 2011 DHL Fastest Lap Award, defended his second place brilliantly, fighting off a late surge by Ferrari’s Ferdinand Alonso. The Spaniard unleashed a series of fast laps starting in lap 48, reducing Webber’s lead to 4.7 seconds. The Australian responded to the pressure, nearly matching Alonso’s lap times from lap 50 through lap 53 and culminating in a brilliant drive in lap 54 to take the day’s fastest lap. Webber completed the 5.615 km Korea International Circuit in 1min 42.037 sec. It was his first fastest lap of 2012 after piloting seven in 2011 for the trophy.

Vettel’s hat-trick of wins has catapulted him into the lead of the driver’s championship. The 2011 champion also remains out front in the hunt for the 2012 DHL Fastest Lap, with 4 fastest laps so far this season. The chasers are still not too far behind so the race is not over yet.
