What goes into a Formula 1 show run? What’s it like to be there? DHL joined the Lotus F1 Team in Manila for one of their twenty show car events of the year.

Screaming down the seaside boulevard of the Mall of Asia, Lotus F1 Team Junior Driver Marlon Alexander Stockinger excited a crowd of some 60,000 at the “Manila Speed Show” on May 3-5.

“It feels a lot like a Grand Prix weekend actually,” says the Fil-Swiss ace driver.

And it sounds like a Grand Prix, too. The Lotus race car displays a power and speed that his currently among the best in Formula 1. Running fourth on the constructors’ table, Team Lotus is on the attack and looking to outmaneuver Ferrari and Mercedes. Three trips to the podium in three races have seen the team outscore the two F1 heavyweights combined.

Fans get up close and personal
Formula 1 show runs give teams the opportunity to showcase their brand and get up close and personal with fans.

“It’s the closest anyone can get to a Formula 1 car,” says Barry Mortimer, Show Car Team Manager Lotus F1 Team.

But staging a show car event is no minor undertaking. The show car team likens it to preparing for race. “We have roughly 20 events per season now, so it’s nearly the same as a race calendar. When we travelled to Manila, we had roughly 3 months to get ready for the trip,” explains Mortimer.

And they have to bring nearly as much stuff with them as if heading to a Formula 1 circuit. “I think it’s roughly between 8 and 10 tons that we take with us,” says Mortimer. It’s a lot of equipment to prepare for international shipping, and DHL is there to ensure that everything arrives safely and on time. The company taps its twenty-five years of experience in motorsports logistics to ensure the Lotus show run goes off without a hitch.

That’s one less thing that Stockinger had to worry about when preparing for his first show in his home country – a moment he was extremely excited about. “It’s a rare privilege for me and I can’t wait to take over the controls,” he said before the event.

In the end all the planning paid off and the Manila Speed Show was a huge success. “I’m pretty much speechless because it’s been everything more than I would have expected,” said Stockinger.
