DHL hosts Manchester United Soccer Schools
In June, some lucky kids in Singapore, Mumbai and Dubai got a once-in-a-lifetime chance to train like the Reds and “learn to play the United way.”
Since it launched in 1999, Manchester United Soccer Schools has recruited, trained and developed a staff of coaches, teachers and educators to bring the club’s coaching philosophy and methodology to kids around the world. In June, they brought this unique experience to underprivileged kids and children of DHL employees – all delivered right to the pitch by DHL.
Fully equipped and raring to get after the ball, some 36 children aged 10 to 15 took the pitch on June 15 in the first of three Manchester United Soccer Schools (MUSS) hosted by DHL. They arrived from the Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home, Darul Ihsan Orphanage and the Muhammadiyah Welfare Home.
Three United coaches and 24 DHL volunteers were on hand to train and chaperone the young players. The boys spent the day running drills, learning tactics and playing small-sided matches with first-class equipment – all part of the idea behind MUSS: bringing the unique experience of training and playing in the same philosophy as the Manchester United 1st team, not to mention the goal of forging friendships with other kids.
A good time was had by all – not least by charming 6-year old Connor, who despite being the youngest bravely took the pitch and gamely challenged the older boys. He stole the show.
The Manchester United Soccer School in Singapore was one of the activities organized as part of this year’s DHL Global Volunteer Day.
DHL India in Mumbai hosted their MUSS on June 23 with some 64 attendees, including customers and their children.
The day started indoors with classroom sessions held by MUSS coaches – an interactive session on ‘football tips and tricks’ for the kids and on the ‘importance of sports’ for the parents. This was followed by some mingling and fun and games in the ‘MUSS lounge.’
The group then moved outside to train with the MUSS coaches and play in some friendly but highly competitive matches on a FIFA accredited soccer field. Afterward, the little honorary Reds watched their parents on display, sweating it out in a penalty shoot-out.
At the end of the day, the kids all proudly accepted their Manchester United certificates and medals, not to mention an opportunity to take pictures with the coaches.
One customer summed it up nicely: “Absolutely fantastic world class soccer experience. Had a lifetime memory. Thankful to DHL for organizing such a great event. Hope the Manchester United-DHL partnership continues to be a great success in future!”
The final Manchester United Soccer School hosted by DHL took place on June 25 in Dubai. Held at the Football Academy at Dubai Sports City, this MUSS was set up much like Mumbai but with a added treat – a special appearance by John Shiels, the founder of United’s Soccer Schools and CEO of the MU Foundation. An inspiring speaker, Shiels talked to the guests about teamwork and leadership while their kids passed, dribbled and had loads of fun out on the pitch. Afterward the parents took to the sidelines to enjoy the action.
Everyone agreed that the event was a resounding success: “My kids loved it and could not stop talking about it. Thank you so much for the invite and really appreciate all the efforts put in by DHL,” said a DHL customer afterward.
MUSS makes a difference
Manchester United Soccer Schools provide boys and girls aged 8-18 the unique experience of training and playing in the same philosophy as the Manchester United 1st team. The hope is to help teach the youngsters skills they can use both on and off the field and to foster long-lasting friendships with other soccer enthusiasts.
