DHL Shore Crew Award to Abu Dhabi

DHL honors Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing with the DHL Shore Crew Award for overcoming what could have been race-ending obstacles during Leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012.

After a string of bad luck and some dramatic efforts to fix hull damage out on the tumultuous seas of the Southern Ocean, Abu Dhabi’s skipper Ian Walker suspended racing in Leg 5 and headed to Puerto Montt, Chile on April 4. Emergency repairs done there were not strong enough to withstand the cyclonic weather forecasted around Cape Horn, so DHL arranged transport for the team’s Volvo Open 70 racing yacht – the Azzam – on a chartered shipping vessel to Itajai. The crew had just four days to make vital repairs and get their boat back in the water for the DHL Itajai In-Port race on April 21 and the start of Leg 6 to Miami the day after – a feat they managed to achieve.

For their efforts, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing received the DHL Shore Crew Award for Leg 6 while in Miami on May 18. Presented by Roger Crook, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding, Freight, DHL initiated this award to recognize the behind-the-scenes efforts of the teams’ shore crews, which include boat builders, sail makers and others, to make the competing yachts as competitive and seaworthy as technically possible.

“Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing came together and worked around the clock to ensure the boat was ready for the next phase of this grueling round-the-world race,” said Crook. “Just as DHL is forced to deliver in high-pressure situations, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing also rose to the challenge.”

Abu Dhabi with two Shore Crew Awards
The Leg 6 DHL Shore Crew Award is the second for the Abu Dhabi Racing shore crew, which also won the award in Leg 4 after showing a relentlessness – led by technical shore manager Mike Danks – that kept their team both in the water and in the race (link:
