Climate Neutral

Despite the many successes of our Green Optimization efforts, there are some greenhouse gas emissions that cannot be avoided by using available technology. Our Climate Neutral services allow customers to offset these emissions. Participating in the voluntary emissions trading scheme, we purchase carbon credits from specialist providers who use the revenue accrued to finance climate protection projects.

Since we introduced the industries first carbon neutral delivery option for parcels back in 2005 we continuously extended the portfolio of green products. Today the climate friendly delivery of mail, parcels and Express shipments is available in more then 60 countries. For ocean, air and road freight as well as contract logistics and our document service EXPRESS ENVELOPE, the offsetting service is available worldwide.

The feedback of our customers is overwhelming. About 2.42 billion GOGREEN items were transported carbon neutrally in 2012. This means that about 180,000 tonnes of CO2 were offset – an increase of 34 percent compared to the previous year.

We even increased our service quality recently: Since January 2014 we offer GOGREEN as a climate neutral service. We do not only offset carbon but other greenhouse gases like methane or nitrous oxid as well. Based on the new product standard “Greenhouse Gas Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting” from the well-known Greenhouse Gas Protocol we also include upstream emissions from the production of fuels and energy. Thus we increase the environmental benefit of all our climate neutral GOGREEN services.

Investments in climate protection

On behalf of our customers, we currently invest in eight climate protection projects, most of which comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) criteria set down in the Kyoto Protocol. Independent third parties monitor the emission reductions of CDM projects. Most projects we support also meet Gold Standard requirements. Projects are eligible for Gold Standard rating if they have a positive impact on the environment and also promote economic and social development in the project country. In accordance with this standard, we also initiated our own climate protection project in Lesotho, southern Africa.

Household Biogas Program in China

Household Biogas Program in China

In China’s Sichuan province, villagers cook on coal fires and store organic waste in open ‘fertilizer’ pits. Both activities cause harmful GHG emissions. This project provides biogas digesters to generate energy and produce more efficient fertilizer, benefiting both environment and people.

Firewood Stoves in Lesotho

Firewood Stoves in Lesotho

In Lesotho in southern Africa, people cook food on open fires inside their huts. The resulting smoke harms their health and the environment. Save80, a cleaner wood burning stove, uses up to 80 percent less wood. The project will run for 10 years and is listed for CDM and Gold Standard certification.

Biomass Power Plant in India

Biomass Power Plant in India

Sugarcane waste and coconut fronds burnt in fields or left to decay emit harmful CO2 and methane. In a CDM Gold Standard project, a biomass power plant in Karnataka now uses this waste to curb emissions and foster development: Farmers now sell crop waste and use ash from the plant as fertilizer.

Landfill Gas Plant in Turkey

Landfill Gas Plant in Turkey

At the Mamak waste disposal plant near Ankara, organic waste was stored in open bins and left untreated, giving off landfill gas with about 50% methane. The plant now captures the gas to make electricity. The CDM Gold Standard project won the World Bank Award for Best Environmental Project 2009.

Water Purifiers in Cambodia

Water Purifiers in Cambodia

Poor quality drinking water sees many Cambodians collect water themselves and treat it by boiling on open fires. The resulting smoke harms their health and the environment. In a CDM and Gold Standard project, water purifiers help remove E.coli and other bacteria without water having to be boiled.

Wind Power Plant in China

Wind Power Plant in China

With a total capacity of 45 megawatt hours, a wind power plant on the east coast of China’s Liuao peninsula produces clean electricity as an alternative to fossil fuels. Sale of carbon credits helps fund the plant. This was the first climate change project in China to receive Gold Standard rating.

Reforestation in Uganda

Reforestation in Uganda

In Uganda deforestation to clear land and supply firewood is a growing threat. The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TIST) aims to balance environmental and farming needs. The project has Voluntary Carbon Standard and Climate Community and Biodiversity Standard certification.

Wind Farm in Nicaragua

Wind Farm in Nicaragua

Nicaragua largely uses non-renewables to produce electricity. In the Amayo Wind Power Project, the country’s first wind farm feeds an annual 200 gigawatt hours of green electricity into the national grid. This CDM Gold Standard project could not have gone ahead without the sale of carbon credits.

We support these Climate Protection Projects

Business customers who use our climate neutral shipping service receive a certificate from us once a year. Our customers can use this certificate and the DHL GOGREEN logo for their own PR and communications purposes. The GOGREEN climate neutral emission calculations and the offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are verified by the Swiss-based auditor Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS). This happens in accordance with the global, cross-industry “GHG Protocol for Products” standard.
