Wagner’s Ring travels to China with DHL

DHL will transport the set and instruments for guest performance in Beijing

As one of three sponsors, DHL is handling the transportation of all equipment for the Nuremberg State Theater’s guest performance in Beijing. Deutsche Post World Net’s logistics subsidiary is supporting a unique cultural event by providing its transportation services: The Nuremberg Philharmonic will perform Wagner’s Ring cycle between Oct. 23 and Nov. 1 for the first time ever in China as part of the “Beijing Music Festival.”

Fifteen containers filled with sets, costumes and props weighing a total of about 100 tons will be transported to the Chinese capital. They will be loaded in Nuremberg between August 29 and 31, and then transported by truck and train to Hamburg. From the northern German port, they will be shipped to Xingang on September 8 before being moved overland to Beijing where the shipment is expected on October 10, 2005. The instruments will be flown from Nuremberg via Frankfurt to Beijing.

The trip will total more than 10,000 kilometers and will require the utmost care. Before loading begins, everything has to be carefully packed and secured. Just like the loading operation, the unloading work in Beijing must follow an exact schedule (at the Poly Theater in Beijing, unloading is permitted only between midnight and 6 a.m.) to guarantee the construction of the sets on-site. The musical instruments will be flown from Nuremberg via Frankfurt to Beijing.

“With DHL, we gained not only a sponsor, but also a professional and competent service provider to whom we’ll gladly entrust our fragile freight,” said Dr. Axel Baisch, Managing Director of the Nuremberg State Theater’s foundation.

“We specialize in transporting any type of goods, whether by air, sea or land. But it really is something special to support such a significant cultural event,” said Frank Maurer, Member of the Divisional Board DHL Express Deutschland.

As the world’s No. one express and logistics brand under Deutsche Post World Net, DHL provides leading express and logistics solutions to customers all over the world. With DHL’s secure and expert logistics support, Nuremberg State Theater will meet all critical requirements in realizing this landmark performance, which has been expected by the Chinese audience.
