Responsibility for people, environment and communities

DHL employs approximately 285,000 people and is active around the world. This fact brings considerable responsibility with it - for our employees, our environment and our society. We answer to this responsibility with a range of projects and programs.
Environment
Responsibility also means ensuring that future generations will inherit an intact, liveable environment. Our goal is to run our operations efficiently while using the least amount of natural resources possible. We aim to strike the right balance between economic success and environmental impact.

For example, a wide range of our products and services is produced using our growing fleet of alternative fuel vehicles or using fewer resources than conventional products.

People and communities
We support our workforce with a range of career development and health management programs. We adhere to the highest ethical standards in our dealings with our customers, suppliers and investors, and are committed to the strictest standards of good corporate governance.

But we also exercise our responsibility outside our business relationships. A case in point: For several years now, our company has been conducting intensive information campaigns for the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. In February 2006, our activities in this area were honored with the Komen Community Service Award of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

We are proud of the fact that many of our employees around the world make a difference in the communities where they live and work by supporting community investment programs.

Economic success
Our activities have a positive impact on the economies of more than 220 countries and territories. The services of DHL and Deutsche Post World Net facilitate trade, create jobs and raise living standards.

In 2004, Deutsche Post World Net employed more than 380,000 people whom we paid 13.7 bn. euros. Our outlays for the purchase of indirect goods and services such as vehicles, printing materials, IT and communications amounted to 5.8 bn. euros. We generate substantial tax revenues for national and local governments.
