What changes are being made at DHL Express USA?

DHL is discontinuing domestic Express and Ground products within the U.S. only. We will focus our efforts on our industry leading international service that DHL is well known for around the world.

DHL Express will offer the latest pickup and the earliest delivery times into and out of many U.S. major metropolitan areas for international shipments, and will continue to have a strong presence in the U.S. coupled with an unparalleled global network.

We will also expand and enhance our international services over time, beginning with the introduction of Economy Select International (day definite service) and International Express 9AM and 12PM (time definite services) in early 2009.

What will DHL's presence be in the U.S. after these changes?

DHL will focus its U.S. Express business on its leading International products, services, and capabilities. In addition to an unparalleled global network, DHL will offer enhanced pickup and delivery times into and out of many key U.S. metropolitan areas.

DHL will continue to have a strong presence in the U.S. via all of its business operations including logistics, global forwarding, mail, and express, providing a strong portfolio of services to its customers both in the U.S. and around the globe.

When will these changes take effect?

DHL Express U.S. will discontinue all U.S. domestic express and ground services by January 30, 2009. This advanced notice will allow customers to effectively manage through the peak season and provides ample time for them to transition to other providers as required.

For some customers, service for some products will be discontinued earlier. These customers have been notified.

Why is DHL making this decision?

The downturn in the U.S. economy has pushed our industry and others to make difficult business decisions.

Our restructuring plan announced on May 28th was designed to reduce our losses to acceptable levels with the financial objectives we set. We took a long-term view of our U.S. business and progressed well with our restructuring plan. However, as responsible business managers, we could not ignore the negative impact of fluctuating fuel costs, the downturn in the U.S. economy, and the continued contraction of the U.S. domestic air express business. Losses in U.S. Express revenue and volume were unsustainable. More had to be done to protect the interests of our customers and employees around the globe as well as our shareholders.

DHL Express must adjust to the dynamics of the market, and is committed to the U.S. Moving forward, we will focus our U.S. resources on our core competency: international shipping.

Will DHL be able to maintain its global leadership position without U.S. domestic express products?

DHL remains committed to the U.S. market. A continued U.S. presence is essential to our entire Express network: Close to half of our top 200 customers are based in the U.S., and U.S. trade lanes make up close to half of our global volume.

DHL's nearly 40 years of international experience has given it an unparalleled global network. We have the most experienced international shipping personnel and capabilities in the industry, with knowledge and expertise in gateway operations and customs clearance, including in-house licensed customs brokers in more than 170 countries - more than any other express carrier worldwide.

DHL Express will offer the latest pickup and the earliest delivery times into and out of many U.S. major metropolitan areas, and will continue to have a strong presence in the U.S. coupled with an unparalleled global network.

With the strength of our comprehensive international network both in the U.S. and globally, we will remain the most competitive choice in the market for international shipping.

100% of U.S. ZIPs that currently receive international shipments will still be delivered to. 99% of current outbound international shipments will continue to be picked up and delivered with virtually no change to what our customers experience today.

DHL also operates very successful supply chain and forwarding businesses in the U.S. with some 27,000 employees combined. DHL also has a successful mail business in the U.S. under the DHL Global Mail brand.

Will these changes ultimately improve/degrade DHL's service performance in the U.S./internationally?

With these changes, DHL Express will focus on its core international business in the U.S.

We will offer the latest pickup and the earliest delivery times into and out of many key U.S. metropolitan areas, and will continue to have a strong presence in the U.S. coupled with an unparalleled global network.

U.S. international inbound and outbound service levels continue to outperform our targets and service in previous years and we are focusing on improving this performance still further.

Our highly specialized international shipping team has increased on a per-package basis and can ensure shipments flow through the entire network properly. We will ultimately deliver an even higher level of service performance.

100% of U.S. zips that currently receive international shipments will continue to be delivered to. Outbound international shipments will continue to be picked up with virtually no change to what our customers experience today.

We will also be enhancing our U.S. IT platforms, bringing our proven global systems to the U.S., which will provide improved tracking visibility and data for international shipments.

Operations

Does DHL plan to continue to partner with the USPS for deliveries?

Yes. DHL plans to continue its partnership with the USPS for deliveries to remote areas of the country. Under the international product model, the USPS will provide final mile delivery for about 1% of our current volume.

It is common for integrators in the industry to use third party providers for delivery to some of their most remote areas.

How many service centers will serve the DHL Express network once these changes are finalized?

DHL Express USA will maintain 103 service centers to provide international services. For commercial and competitive reasons, we are not yet disclosing the specific locations.
