The Finn is awarded with the Formula 1 fastest driver trophy for the second time
Even before the final race of the season, it's official: Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen is again the fastest of the fast in 2008 and, like last year, won the DHL Fastest Lap Trophy. With this trophy, which is awarded by DHL Express Brasil CEO Joakim Thrane to the winner at the Brazilian Grand Prix, DHL honors the driver who can record the highest number of fastest laps in one season. Räikkönen is currently in an unbeatable position here as he is ten points ahead of his teammate Felipe Massa, his fellow countryman Heikki Kovalainen and BMW Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld with two of the fastest laps of this season in each case.
"Not being able to lay claim to the World Championship title is understandably a bitter pill for Kimi Räikkönen to swallow. But he has once again succeeded in winning the DHL Fastest Lap Trophy even before the close of the season, amply demonstrating his mettle. Ten fastest laps in 17 races are an unmistakable statement of his world champion qualities." - That is the verdict of former German Formula 1 pilot Christian Danner, now a TV expert for RTL, on Räikkönen's performance.
The lead achieved by Räikkönen is impressive. In 2007, it was a neck-and-neck challenge between him and Felipe Massa right up to the very end, which the Finn only managed to win in the home straight by the slimmest of leads: At the end of the 2007 season, both Ferrari drivers had clocked up six of the fastest laps and even the same number of second fastest laps, so that in the end the final decision was based on the greatest number of third fastest laps, with the title therefore going to the "Iceman".
With ten fastest laps in 17 races, Kimi Räikkönen has set his own season record even before the Brazilian Grand Prix. Back in 2005, he also achieved ten fastest laps, albeit out of a total of 19 races. During his Formula 1 career Räikkönen has so far recorded a total of 35 fastest laps. This puts him in third place on the ranking list behind Michael Schuhmacher (76) and Alain Prost (41).
DHL awards the DHL Fastest Lap Trophy to the Formula 1 driver who achieves the fastest laps in one season. The trophy was first awarded in 2007 and will be presented for the second time this year again in Brazil.
