Hitting All the Right Notes

Mention Gewandhausorchester to any classical music aficionado, and they’ll tell you instantly that this is one of the world’s most prestigious orchestras.

Based in Leipzig, Germany, the orchestra has been a byword for world-class music for over 275 years. It has premiered works of some of the most famous composers in history including Schumann, Schubert and Wagner and has been led by an illustrious list of renowned conductors from Felix Mendelssohn and Wilhelm Furtwängler to Riccardo Chailly and the current Kapellmeister – Andris Nelsons.

The Gewandhausorchester’s fame has spread partly through its impressive touring schedule. With this world’s largest professional symphony orchestra, the musicians spend approximately one third of the year on the road and so it was perhaps inevitable that they would need logistics support and expertise.

DHL first began working with the Gewandhausorchester in 2005 and became their Official Logistics Partner in 2009.

The two companies share many common values and are a perfect match geographically. Leipzig is not only a city with an eminent musical heritage but also home to DHL’s major European hub.

With no less than 185 virtuoso musicians in the orchestra, every year there are 100 world-class performances at some of the most famous concert halls around the globe from La Scala in Milan to Tokyo’s Suntory Hall.

This is no mean feat. Many of the musicians’ instruments are rare, fragile and highly sensitive to temperature changes. The Gewandhausorchester relies on DHL to ensure reliable, efficient, temperature-controlled delivery of more than 100 of these irreplaceable instruments to every venue.

DHL also ensures that other vital pieces of equipment arrive on time, items such as the conductor's rostrum and baton, the musicians’ music stands, their scores and wardrobe.

Such precision requires detailed logistical planning and DHL often works closely with the orchestra up to one and a half years prior to a performance.

Then, as the lights go out, the curtain lifts and the conductor raises his baton, the musicians can focus on captivating worldwide audiences with their tunes. DHL has taken care of the set-up behind the scenes in time.
