DHL scoops ‘Third Party Logistics Company of the Year’ at Automotive Supply Chain Global Awards 2014

Award recognizes the efficiency gains and change management at the off-site sequencing operation at TyreFort, Birmingham/UK entailing:
  • Sequenced parts variants increasing from 1,500 to 3,787
  • 340,000 parts sequenced each week with 99.99% accuracy
  • 311% increase in number of pallets stored from 4,500 to 14,000
Global logistics leader DHL is honoured to win the ‘Third Party Logistics Company of the Year’ award at the prestigious Automotive Supply Chain Global Awards 2014, which highlight excellence in the automotive supply chain industry.

The award not only recognizes DHL’s contribution in sequencing parts for ten Jaguar Land Rover models across two Midlands manufacturing plants and multiple assembly lines in the UK, but in particular its smooth Change Management Programme of its offsite Sequencing Centre in TyreFort, Birmingham to support Jaguar Land Rover’s ambitious growth plans.

Smooth running of the Value-Added Services
The site provides a range of services from receiving deliveries of supplier parts to sequencing and outbound transportation of sequenced material to the assembly lines at Solihull and Castle Bromwich. The smooth running of the Value-Added Services carried out at TyreFort is critical to ensure that the assembly lines at both plants continue to run without disruption.

Since its opening, the TyreFort Sequencing operation has continuously evolved to keep pace with challenges to Jaguar Land Rover’s business growth and increasing vehicle customization that consumers are demanding.

Where sourcing is regional, if not global, a major challenge for car makers is to manage parts availability against production schedules as far in advance as possible, and with as much flexibility as possible up to final assembly, to allow for consumer customization.

Increasing demand and complexity
Increasing demand for Jaguar Land Rover’s vehicles has seen it invest substantially in the UK. In response, DHL has continually reviewed its processes and developed its systems at its Tyrefort Sequencing Centre to minimize the impact of increased demand and complexity.

Transportation has also played a vital role in ensuring the timely supply of materials to the center. To achieve this, DHL operates a dedicated fleet of 14 HGV’s, one rigid truck and two vans to ensure parts are in the right place at the right time.
