Understanding the Fundamentals Behind the Product
How are emission-reduced fuels leveraged to support the reduction of CO₂e emissions in Air and Ocean Freight?
- Collect: Waste materials such as cooking oil and household or agricultural waste are collected as sustainable feedstock (RED II compliant).
- Refine: Feedstock is processed into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
- Blend: SAF is mixed with conventional jet fuel to make it suitable for aircraft.
- Deliver: Fuel is transported to airports and used in aircraft.
- Reduce: Flights using SAF achieve around 80% reduction (depending on feedstock, production pathway, etc.) in the lifecycle GHG emissions (well-to-wake) compared to fossil jet fuel.
How does Book & Claim work?
Book & Claim allows companies to access the benefits of more sustainable fuels, even when the physical shipment does not use them directly. DHL executes the fuel switch with carrier partners and assigns the resulting emission reductions to your shipments.
Our methodology follows the GLEC Framework, EN16258, and the Smart Freight Centre’s Voluntary Market Based Measures Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting. All reductions are independently audited, and certificates are provided for your reporting and assurance processes.
Three steps:
- You select your desired reduction level.
- DHL facilitates the fuel switch with selected carrier partners and allocates the respective emission reductions.
- You receive externally verified documentation confirming the reduction.
The Book & Claim Process:
- The availability of Sustainable Aviation or Marine fuel is currently limited. To overcome geographical or physical constraints, we leverage a book & claim process that allows claiming the benefits of more sustainable fuels within the value chain without physically using the fuel on each trade lane.
- The book & claim process is based on a One Atmosphere approach, which considers the air freight or ocean freight shipping industry as one network. That means that there is an accounting, instead of a physical, connection between the sustainable fuel and the shipment.
- The book & claim process facilitates the verified sustainable fuel switch. This takes place in the same transport mode i.e. the same network, but not the same aircraft or vessel.
- You book an emission-reduced transport service and DHL Global Forwarding handles management and verification. This includes aligning with carriers and verifying with external auditors. You can then claim the allocated CO₂e emission reductions using a verified certificate.
