NEW ROAD TAXES IN AUSTRIA AND HUNGARY

December 15, 2023

Following the recent major increase in German road taxes (Maut), the Austrian and Hungarian governments have now also decided on new road taxes.

In the Austrian Parliament they have agreed to follow Germany's example introducing a CO2 Surcharge on their road taxes. This means that the general Maut tariffs in Austria will increase by 7.4% from 1 January 2024. In order to finance future tunnel constructions, the Austrian Maut will also be adjusted by 25% on selected road sections (A12 and A13).

In Hungary, they some time ago decided on a 17% increase in road taxes as of 1 October 2023. It has now been decided to increase road taxes by additional 39.51% with effect from 1 January 2024. This way the total impact of the new road taxes will be EUR 0.577 (approx. DKK 4.30) per kilometer that trucks drive on Hungarian motorways.

We also know that several other countries are planning to introduce similar kilometer-based road taxes, or to increase existing road taxes. We constantly try to keep ourselves informed as much as possible, and we will of course make new announcements as soon as any of this becomes more concrete.

An overview of the current road taxes for 2024 on transports to/from all countries in Europe can be downloaded here. The new surcharges will take effect from 1 January 2024.
