Landslide Disrupts Train Traffic in Central and Southern Europe – Potential Impacts on DHL Freight Transport

July 28, 2025

A landslide that occurred last week in the Brenner Pass, Austria, has complicated freight traffic in Central and Southern Europe. The railway section near Innsbruck, Austria, was blocked by the landslide on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Cleanup efforts continued throughout the week, and the railway's full capacity will gradually be restored.

Brenner Pass is a Key Route for Transport to Italy

Most of DHL Freight's traffic to Italy consists of intermodal transport, where trailers travel part of the journey by train. Although the railway section has been partially reopened, traffic is still operating at limited capacity, which may cause delays, particularly in intermodal transports heading to Italy.

Disruptions in rail traffic may result in delays of 1-3 days for deliveries from Italy to Finland or 1-2 days for pickups from Northern Europe to Italy.
