Central Europe: Rail Works Disrupt International Shipments in July–August
July 8, 2026
Extensive rail infrastructure works on the Brenner Corridor will cause significant disruptions to international freight transport in Central Europe between 18 July and 9 August 2026. The impact will be particularly noticeable on shipments between Germany and Italy, but delays are expected to affect transport networks across Europe more broadly.
The Brenner Corridor, which connects Italy and Austria, is one of Central Europe's most important logistics routes. During the construction works, the railway section between Brenner and Sterzing will be completely closed, significantly restricting rail freight operations.
The situation will be further complicated by an additional closure on the Peri–Domegliara section between 20 and 27 July 2026, increasing pressure on alternative routes and creating additional challenges for transport planning.
During the construction period, available transport capacity is expected to be reduced to approximately 50% of normal levels, significantly impacting capacity availability and potentially extending transit times.
The rail closures and longer-than-normal detour routes will result in additional transportation costs. Consequently, a surcharge will apply to all bookings during the period 18 July–9 August 2026.
DHL Freight is working actively with its partners to minimize the impact of these disruptions on customers' supply chains and to ensure deliveries are carried out as smoothly as possible.
