Rail Accident in Germany Causing Disruptions to European Transport

February 23, 2026

A freight train derailment at Elze station in Germany on 20 February 2026 has damaged the local railway infrastructure and is causing disruptions to north–south transport routes in Europe. As a result, shipments that normally pass through the area — including those handled by DHL Freight — may experience delays.

Due to the accident, the number of freight train services has been reduced, which is causing congestion and longer waiting times. In addition, a complete track closure will be implemented in the area between 27 February and 2 March 2026 to repair the damaged structures. The closure will shut down Elze station and the surrounding area for several days and will continue to slow traffic even after repair work has been completed, as the line will initially operate on a single track. Normal capacity is expected to be restored by mid-March, weather permitting.

The disruptions affect both regular transport services and additional-capacity trains, which are being rerouted via detours such as Kassel, Altenbeken and Osnabrück. These alternative routes increase transit times and may lead to occasional train cancellations.

DHL Freight is closely monitoring the situation and doing its utmost to minimise the impact on transport services.

We apologise for any delays this situation may cause. You can track the progress of your shipment in the myDHLFreight portal.
