DHL SUPPLY CHAIN TO BUILD A NEW LOGISTICS CENTER IN SIPOO, FINLAND

Press Release: Vantaa, 24 May 2022

  • DHL Supply Chain will build a new state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral logistics center in Sipoo, Finland
  • The approx. 44,000-square-meter facility will offer capabilities for various types of warehousing

DHL Supply Chain, the contract logistics leader within Deutsche Post DHL Group, is going to build an approximately 44,000-square-meter multi-user logistics center in Sipoo, Finland. Located some 35 kilometers north of Helsinki, the center is scheduled to open in early 2024. A deal for the 130,000-square-meter plot has been signed, and construction will begin in June this year.

The new facility will offer customers a state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral logistics space. The size of the logistics center is the equivalent of 6 football fields and will offer capabilities for various needs and types of goods, from narrow aisle to pallet warehousing. Future users can also take advantage of an extensive space for storing hazardous materials.

”The availability of modern high-quality logistics space is currently very limited in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Therefore, we have been considering the construction of a new purpose-built facility for quite a while,” states Antti Saarinen, Area Director Finland, DHL Supply Chain. “Additionally, with a carbon-neutral facility we can further empower our customers to achieve more sustainable supply chains.”

“Our goal is to continue to grow in the region and to help companies optimize their logistics activities. Today’s logistics market prefers multi-user solutions to single-customer warehouses, since moving costs from fixed to variable has clear advantages. In addition, seasonal fluctuations in various types of businesses can be better managed, thanks to flexible space and resource management,” says Ilkka Marja-aho, Business Development Director, DHL Supply Chain Finland.

The multi-user logistics center in Sipoo will be built right next to the capital area and offer ideal access to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, Port of Helsinki / Vuosaari Harbour and key transport routes. At its full capacity, the logistics center can employ up to two hundred employees.

Carbon-neutral facility

The carbon-neutral logistics center features photovoltaic systems, geothermal heat pumps, enhanced building management system, LED lighting with smart controls, low-use water appliances and rainwater harvesting, to name a few of the environmentally friendly qualities. Electricity not generated onsite will come from renewable resources, and the facility will be certified to meet the BREEAM* Excellent Standard.

With this construction project, DHL Supply Chain fulfills its responsibility for sustainable business practice and makes an important contribution to Deutsche Post DHL Group's target of zero-emission logistics by 2050.
