Press Release: Tokyo, March 30 2024

  • DHL has been delivering sustainable logistical support to Formula E since its inception and is now entering its 10th year of partnership
  • Season 10 features 16 races, including an inaugural race in Tokyo, Japan

DHL, the Official Founding and Logistics Partner of Formula E, is embarking on its 10th year of partnership, delivering the 10th season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. DHL's partnership offers cutting-edge sustainable logistics, utilizing multimodal transport solutions, including both ocean and road freight, and maximizes efficiency. Additionally, for the past three seasons, a great focus has been given to the use of biofuels for road and ocean freight, resulting in a substantial reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This practice will be continued in the upcoming and subsequent seasons, with plans to introduce additional sustainable logistics solutions in the near future.

This initiative is part of DHL’s and Formula E’s "Together Green" platform, where DHL's yellow and Formula E's blue colors merge to symbolize a more environmentally friendly future.

DHL has been integral to the world's first all-electric motorsport championship since 2014. Leveraging 40 years of global motorsport experience, DHL has played a crucial role in bringing the Championship to cities worldwide, offering fans the opportunity to enjoy the excitement of Formula E while championing the message of sustainability.

Under the meticulous coordination of DHL Global Forwarding Motorsport teams in Italy and Japan, the teams handled international and domestic transportation, ensuring seamless customs clearance for all vehicles and equipment entering and leaving Japan. Ensuring everything runs like clockwork, the teams’ duties extend beyond merely transporting. They manage various responsibilities, including trucking, documentation management, on-site coordination, and supervising all ad hoc shipments.

“DHL is proud to be the driving force behind the sustainable transportation of Formula E cargo. Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and Formula E’s while ensuring the smooth delivery of all the essentials for these thrilling races remains unwavering. Together with Formula E, we're paving the way for a greener future in motorsports logistics,” says Manuela Gianni, Head of Motorsports Italy at DHL Global Forwarding.

Karsten Michaelis, President and Representative Director, DHL Global Forwarding Japan K.K. said,“ With more than 40 years of experience in motorsports logistics, we have experts in transportation and customs clearance to provide safe, flexible, and prompt transportation to connect to the next host country. We are very pleased to support the transportation for the first event in Japan, where there are so many Formula E fans.”

Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan said, “We take great pride in our support of Formula E's inaugural event in Japan, as it aligns with our shared vision of combating climate change and promoting electric vehicles (EVs). As we strive for a greener future, DHL remains committed to pursuing sustainable logistics. This includes the adoption of EVs to our operations and implementing carbon-neutral practices within our logistics facilities.”

This season consists of 16 races to be held in 10 iconic cities worldwide, including the inaugural race in Tokyo. DHL is set to cover over 98,000 kilometers during this season. This extensive journey will involve the transportation of around 400 tonnes of crucial freight per race, including race cars, batteries, charging units, broadcast equipment, as well as marketing and hospitality materials.

In addition to providing logistical support, in Japan, DHL is working on local initiatives such as scaling the use of electric vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at current logistics facilities, while building operationally carbon-neutral buildings. In addition, it assists with customers' decarbonization efforts through joint workshops and the service offering of GoGreen Plus. This shipping service utilizes sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and sustainable marine fuels (SMF).

Being a trailblazer in green logistics, DHL was the first logistics company to set a measurable carbon efficiency target: improve efficiency by 30% compared to 2007 levels by 2021. This goal was achieved four years ahead of schedule, in 2016. In 2017, DHL committed to an even greater sustainability goal: to reach net-zero emissions logistics by 2050. As part of this sustainability roadmap, a commitment of 7 billion euros was made in 2021 to support clean and climate-neutral logistics by 2030, which includes the electrification of 60% of the last-mile fleet.
