Against the Clock in All Weathers
The handling of time-critical goods takes place on the 640,000 square meter apron and in the three terminals. The apron is divided into five sections and has up to 64 aircraft parking positions for simultaneous loading and unloading. Each parking position is equipped with an automatic parking guidance system and a ground power supply for aircraft. As soon as an aircraft has reached the parking position, a loading group takes over the unloading of the air freight containers with the help of highloaders. The containers are then transported to the terminals on tugs.
Fascinating Technology and a Passionate Team
The aircraft containers are loaded and unloaded in the terminals and sorted via an almost 47 km long main sorting system. The sophisticated technical system connects all terminals with each other. An additional sorting system can process up to 43,200 letters and documents per hour. Leipzig was also the first hub in the world to install an automatic sorting system for items weighing up to 170 kilograms. Our sorting staff can now process around 150,000 items per hour. Large consignments that cannot be sorted using the conveyor system, such as cars or pallets with vaccinations, are handled in a separate terminal, Terminal 3.
Heroes of the Night
The hub fascinates with state-of-the-art technology, impressive dimensions and sets international standards in logistics. But what brings the DHL hub in Leipzig to life and makes it a unique location worldwide is our passionate team. Every night, thousands of colleagues in front of and behind the scenes give their all to send every shipment carefully and punctually on its way to our customers.
