Every number tells a story
Every night, hundreds of thousands of shipments are sorted at the DHL Leipzig Hub. For this highly complex process to run reliably, it takes more than just operational excellence – it also requires a deep understanding of the processes behind the scenes. This is exactly where the work of the Performance Analysis department comes in.
Alina Stabrodt, Manager Performance Analysis, and Josefine Uhle, Performance Analyst at the LEJ Hub, ensure through their work that the key metrics – so-called Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) – are not only measured, but also understood and continuously improved. “We analyze a wide range of operational KPIs and look into the root causes behind these numbers,” Alina explains. The goal is to work with other departments to develop concrete measures that keep processes running smoothly and ensure the KPIs move in the right direction.
KPIs for a strong network
One central KPI, for example, is On Time Departure – in other words, how punctually our aircraft leave the hub. This metric has a direct impact on whether shipments arrive at their destination on time – a factor that is essential for our entire network. Customs is also an important aspect: the Depart Facility (DF) Compliance KPI measures whether a shipment is scanned when it leaves the hub. “This isn’t just important for the customer to create transparency, but also for customs authorities,” Josefine explains. And the good news: “In Europe, Leipzig Hub is currently the best location for this KPI. That’s a fantastic achievement!” she says proudly.
From numbers to change
But Performance Analysis is more than just observing – it’s about understanding and improving. One example: Medical Express shipments. “A long time ago, we set ourselves the goal of improving performance for these sensitive shipments,” says Alina. The solution: more targeted consolidation, so that shipments aren’t spread all over the aircraft and can be unloaded faster. The results speak for themselves: over 96% performance – a record at the LEJ Hub! Anyone who thinks working with numbers is monotonous is mistaken. “Numbers are actually just a small part of our work,” Alina emphasizes. “We look beyond the numbers. Every number tells a story.”
Excellence in numbers
And that’s exactly what makes the job so exciting. “There’s never a boring day, we’re constantly learning something new,” Alina says. “At the core, it’s always about improvements. What can we do better? Where is there potential for even more quality?”
Josefine also appreciates the variety: “Of course, you need a certain affinity for numbers and analysis in this job, but you also keep gaining new insights.” One memory has stuck with her in particular: “A few winters ago, the snow was over a meter high. Many containers couldn’t be scanned, some were even frozen solid – it was quite a challenge to reconstruct those data gaps.”
Regular exchange with other hubs and departments is an integral part of the LEJ Performance Team’s work. “Sometimes the root causes of issues lie at other locations,” Alina explains. That’s why they look across sites: How can we shape processes so that the entire network benefits? Because one thing is clear: good performance is teamwork. “Every shipment counts. Every department can contribute,” says Alina. And this commitment pays off:
“This year, we achieved the best performance in many KPIs. The connectivity of shipments forwarded through the LEJ Hub has never been better. The same goes for DF Compliance. We can be very proud of that – and everyone here has played their part.”
