Industry Challenge

The supply chain sector, though, is facing a talent shortage. Significant increases in demand, combined with an ageing workforce and the need for new skills, mean that what was once simply a gap is now becoming a crisis.

One of many ways in which DHL Supply Chain is working to tackle that shortage is through signing the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating its commitment to those who have served as Regulars or Reservists in the Armed Forces.

Since its core values are closely aligned to those of HM Forces, DHL Supply Chain will actively seek to find the right position for the right person.

DHL Supply Chain Solution

One such person is Chris Bingley.

Following six years in the Royal Regiment of Artillery, observing and locating the enemy, Chris decided it was time to settle down, start a family and spend more time with those he loved.

During his various postings with the army he had served in warzones such as Iraq and travelled across the globe.

But despite enjoying his time in service, he realized that the military wouldn’t enable him to have the flexibility he wanted in his personal life and so he decided to leave and pursue a civilian career.

Chris wanted to work with another large and structured organisation and so, following advice from a friend, he began to look at a career in the logistics industry. It was then that Chris turned to DHL, first as an agency driver and then as a full time employee.

Since starting as a driver’s mate in 2006, Chris has held a number of roles within the business. As an ambitious team member, he has progressed quickly, taking on additional training and responsibilities whenever the opportunities have arisen.

Chris suggests a number of similarities between his role at DHL and his time in the military, such as the respect employees give each other. He also believes that the understanding of world geography and the driving skills he gained whilst in service have supported him on his career path at DHL.

Amongst other things, he has gained his CPC driver qualification, taken part in DHL’s TACS programmes and completed a manual-handling course whilst working at DHL.

Today, Chris is a Transport FLM, managing a large team and the drivers who keep the business moving. He works on the early shift and oversees the delivery of loads to their final destination as well as managing any issues and compliance tasks that arise throughout the day.

“I would absolutely recommend DHL to others, in particular other ex-service people,” Chris says. “Like any job there are challenges but I get on well with the team I work with and have been able to keep progressing to fulfil my ambitions in the ten years I’ve been here. My managers have always recognized the impact I make and have supported me through my career.”
