Journey of a Package
From packing and paperwork to customs clearance and final delivery, here’s how DHL Express works in moving your shipment from A to B.
Read on for a step-by-step guide, and what information you may need to provide to help your shipment move smoothly through the network.
Step 1: Prepare Your Shipment
Every successful shipment starts with good preparation.
Before shipping, check that your item can be sent to the destination country, as
some goods are restricted, prohibited, or require additional documentation.
Next, pack your shipment securely using strong, suitable packaging to help protect it throughout transit.
If you're sending valuable goods, you may also want to consider Shipment Value Protection for additional peace of mind.
Step 2: Create Your Shipment
Now it's time to provide the information needed to get your shipment moving.
You'll need the sender's and receiver's details, along with accurate shipment dimensions, weight, and value. For international shipments, a clear description of the contents is also important to support customs clearance.
Depending on the destination, additional documents such as invoices, permits, or certificates may be required.
Step 3: Hand It Over to DHL Express
Once your shipment has been created and labeled, it's ready to enter the DHL Express network.
You can either drop it off at a DHL location or arrange a courier pickup. From there, your shipment begins its journey through our global network.
Tracking starts once the shipment has been scanned and processed, allowing you to follow its progress along the way.
Step 4: Track Its Journey
As your shipment moves through the DHL Express network, tracking updates help keep you informed.
You'll be able to see key milestones as it travels through service centers and transport hubs. Some tracking locations may differ from the delivery address, which simply reflects where the shipment is being processed at that stage.
If additional information is needed, DHL Express will contact you directly.
Step 5: Clear Customs
Before an international shipment can be delivered, it must clear customs.
Customs authorities review the shipment information and documentation to ensure the goods comply with local regulations. Depending on the destination, duties and taxes may also apply.
Most customs delays are caused by missing paperwork or inaccurate shipment information, so providing complete and accurate details from the start is important.
Step 6: Complete Delivery
Once customs clearance is complete, your shipment moves to the final stage of its journey: delivery.
In some cases, a signature is required upon receipt. Depending on the destination, recipients may also be able to choose alternative delivery options.
When shipment details are accurate and documentation is complete, delivery is typically faster and smoother for both sender and recipient.
