Shipping from Brazil to Japan starts with an invoice describing each item, its real value and its origin, and with a check on what Japan allows in. A consignment with a total customs value of ¥10,000 or less clears free of customs duty and consumption tax, with a short list of exceptions set in law.

Japan is not an expensive destination to clear. It is a literal one. Customs classify what the invoice says, the animal and plant quarantine services can destroy goods outright, and nothing is negotiated on arrival. The paperwork is where the shipment is won or lost.

How much is the Japanese duty exemption worth?

It is worth ¥10,000 in customs value. A consignment whose total customs value stays at or below that figure enters without customs duty and without consumption tax, according to Japan Customs. Domestic excises still apply, such as liquor tax and tobacco tax. Source: Japan Customs, September 2026.

Not every product qualifies. Japan Customs lists articles excluded from the exemption regardless of value, among them leather bags and gloves, leather footwear, ski boots and knitted apparel such as T-shirts and sweaters (Japan Customs). For those, duty is calculated from the first yen.

There is a useful caveat. When an item from that list arrives as a personal gift and customs accept the private use claim, the ¥10,000 exemption can still be applied.

And one rule that catches anyone tempted to split a shipment. If several consignments from the same sender reach the same recipient at the same time, their values are added together to test the limit (Japan Customs). Three boxes do not create three exemptions.

How does Japan calculate duty above the limit?

On customs value, with a simplified schedule for small consignments. When the total customs value is ¥200,000 or less, the simplified tariff applies, condensing thousands of lines into a handful of categories: 20% for tomato sauce, ice cream and furs; 15% for coffee, tea and gelatin; 10% for animal products, edibles and apparel; 3% for plants, chemicals, metals, plastics and furniture; duty free for a specific list; and 5% for everything else (Japan Customs).

Alcoholic drinks have their own category, charged per litre. And a group of products sits outside the simplified tariff altogether, including milk, cereals, peanuts, cocoa products, tobacco, footwear and leather goods, which return to the general tariff.

Consumption tax is then charged on the customs value plus the duty, at 10%, with a reduced 8% rate for food and non-alcoholic drinks (Japan Customs).

Above ¥200,000, the recipient has to file a formal import declaration at the customs office, with the invoice and supporting documents, instead of the simplified courier procedure (Japan Customs).

What applies at each value band?

The table matches the customs value of the consignment with what happens on arrival, under the rules in force in September 2026.

One option is worth knowing. The importer may ask for the whole consignment to be taxed under the general tariff rather than the simplified one, when that works out better for the mix of goods, and the choice applies to the entire shipment rather than item by item (Japan Customs). For a box holding products from different categories, that changes the maths.

Which documents does the shipment need?

A commercial invoice for a sale, a proforma invoice for a gift, with full sender and receiver details, an item-by-item description in English, quantity, unit value, total value, country of origin and purpose. How to fill in each field is covered in the guide to the commercial invoice for international shipping.

Two details matter more in Japan than in the average destination. The first is the HS code, because the simplified tariff works by category and a wrong classification moves the rate. The second is the recipient's phone number: above ¥200,000 it is the recipient who files the formal declaration, and without contact details the shipment sits.

On the Brazilian side, the courier files a DRE (Declaração de Remessas de Exportação, the simplified export declaration) for goods worth up to US$ 1,000 that need no licence; above that, or when a licence applies, the filing moves to the DU-E, Brazil's standard export declaration (Receita Federal, August 2026).

What can't you send to Japan?

Start with the absolute prohibitions published by Japan Customs: narcotics, firearms and ammunition, explosives, chemical weapon precursors, counterfeit currency and cards, obscene material, child pornography and goods infringing intellectual property (Japan Customs).

Then comes the layer that catches food parcels, and it is stricter than in most destinations Brazilians ship to.

  • Meat and offal in any form, raw or processed, including charque (dried salted beef), sausages, ham, bacon and meat-filled snacks, require an inspection certificate issued by the exporting country's government. Without it they cannot enter, even as a souvenir or for personal consumption (MAFF, Animal Quarantine Service).
  • Eggs, bones and dairy products fall under the same animal quarantine.
  • Importing animal products without the certificate carries up to three years in prison or a fine of up to ¥3 million, and arrests have been made over international parcels (MAFF).
  • All plant material goes through plant quarantine: part of it is banned outright, and the rest needs a phytosanitary certificate issued in Brazil plus inspection on arrival (Japan Customs and MAFF).
  • Sending plants inside a personal letter is prohibited under Japan's Plant Protection Act.

In practice that rules out cheese, doce de leite, linguiça sausage, charque and fresh fruit. Roasted coffee, nuts and processed goods with no meat or dairy usually travel fine, provided the invoice describes them correctly.

How is a Japanese address written?

A Japanese address runs from the largest unit to the smallest: postcode, prefecture, city, ward, block and number, and only then the recipient's name. Written in the Latin alphabet for an international shipment the order reverses, giving name, number and ward, city, prefecture, postcode in the 000-0000 format, Japan, and a phone number with the +81 prefix.

Ask for the address in writing, ideally copied from an order the person has already received. Most Japanese cities do not use street names, and rebuilding an address from memory almost always fails.

For the box, the basics solve most problems: a new, sturdy carton, padding on every side, nothing loose inside and old labels removed. The step by step is in the guide to preparing your package for international shipping.

How do you stop the receiver paying on delivery?

The default is duties payable by the recipient, matching the DAP Incoterm, so the charge appears on arrival. If you want the customer or the family member to receive the box with nothing to pay, ship DDP, with duty and consumption tax settled by you at origin.

For an online store this choice moves the final price and the refusal rate, and it weighs more in Japan, where customers expect the total to be known up front. The cost blocks behind the calculation are in the guide to exporting from Brazil.

How long does it take?

Transit time is the sum of the service booked, the pickup city and clearance in Japan, which no carrier controls. The quote shows the estimate for your lane, with no guaranteed release date.

Two windows crowd the queue: late December and Golden Week, in early May. For a destination built on European rules, compare with the guide to shipping from Brazil to Germany; for the busiest lane out of Brazil, see shipping from Brazil to the US.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Brazil to Japan

A consignment with a customs value of ¥10,000 or less enters free of customs duty and consumption tax. Above that, the simplified tariff applies up to ¥200,000, plus consumption tax of 10%, or 8% on food.

No. Gifts use the same ¥10,000 customs value limit. The difference is that, for items on the excluded list, customs may still grant the exemption when they accept that the goods are for personal use.

Not without an inspection certificate from the Brazilian government. Meat and dairy go through animal quarantine, and anything arriving without the certificate is refused, even in small quantities and for personal use.

By default the recipient, under DAP. If you want the box to arrive with nothing to pay, book the shipment DDP and settle the duty and consumption tax at origin.

The recipient loses the simplified procedure and has to file a formal import declaration at customs, with the invoice and supporting documents. Warn them before you ship, so the paperwork does not catch them by surprise.

Selling into Japan on a regular basis?

Japan rewards shippers who arrive organised: the right classification, a clear English description, a certificate when the product demands one, and a decision on who pays the tax before the box leaves. With a business account, labels and documents come from one place and you choose, shipment by shipment, between DAP and DDP.
