Why Low-Carbon Logistics Matters
How GoGreen Plus Delivers Real Carbon Reduction
Turning Ambition into Action

As businesses face growing pressure to decarbonize, logistics is a critical lever for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. DHL’s innovative GoGreen Plus enables businesses of all sizes to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other solutions to achieve supply‑chain‑level carbon reduction targets, helping cross‑border transport move toward a more sustainable future.

Transport accounts for more than a third of CO₂ emissions from end-use sectors, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA)1. After a temporary dip during the COVID-19 pandemic, transport emissions are on the rise again. To stay on course for net-zero emissions by 2050, the IEA says CO₂ output from transport must fall by more than 3% per year through 20302.

The situation in Hong Kong is similar. In 2024, Hong Kong generated approximately 33.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) GHG emissions, with the transport sector accounting for 18%3. To meet the government’s climate target of halving emissions by 2035 compared with 2005 levels, reducing carbon emissions in international shipping and supply chain operations has become an essential step for businesses.

However, achieving meaningful carbon reduction in the transport sector is not easy. What businesses need is not just a single ‘green option’, but a solution that can:

  • Deliver specific, measurable emission‑reduction results
  • Provide transparent and traceable decarbonization methods (such as SAF “insetting”)
  • Scale alongside business growth
  • Maintain commercial practicality without compromising speed or reliability

This is precisely where GoGreen Plus brings value: it enables companies to access a truly practical, trackable, and internationally compliant low‑carbon logistics solution — without affecting delivery speed — helping businesses strike the right balance between sustainability and operational efficiency.

Cutting carbon, not corners: The journey of GoGreen Plus

How GoGreen Plus Works: The Innovative Book & Claim Model

GoGreen Plus uses the internationally recognized “Book & Claim” mechanism, a simple yet highly effective approach to reducing emissions. When customers choose this service, DHL purchases and uses Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) within its global air network to replace the equivalent amount of fossil fuel that would have been used. Customers can then legally and transparently claim the associated emission reductions — even if the specific flight carrying their shipment did not directly use SAF.

In other words, Book & Claim separates a company’s carbon‑reduction contribution from the exact physical fuel used on an individual aircraft. This allows businesses to achieve measurable supply‑chain decarbonization without changing routes, flight schedules, or existing logistics operations.

This model, known as carbon insetting, differs fundamentally from traditional carbon offsets (such as tree‑planting or renewable‑energy investments). Instead of compensating emissions outside the logistics chain, insetting directly reduces emissions within the aviation system itself, making it a more credible and impactful method for driving real decarbonization in the air‑transport sector.

Measuring Impact: Scientific and Transparent

Our carbon‑reduction targets strictly follow the standards of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and incorporate 2030 interim milestones to ensure continuous oversight and verification. As a result, GoGreen Plus includes a fully auditable reporting framework:

  • Regular quantification of emission reductions: Emission savings are calculated based on the actual procurement and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
  • Third‑party verification: Each year, an independent organization issues verified emissions‑reduction certificates and reports (for example, SGS‑verified Scope 3 insetting values), enabling companies to use them as evidence for ESG disclosures or annual greenhouse‑gas monitoring.
  • Traceable and comparable: Using the Book & Claim mechanism, companies can claim verifiable, comparable emission‑reduction benefits without changing flight routes or schedules, and align disclosures with frameworks such as SBTi and CSRD.

From ambition to action – the results are clear

Since we launched GoGreen Plus, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’ve continually expanded our sustainable logistics solutions ever since. As demand has grown, we have proactively worked to increase our use of sustainable fuels. For example, we have formed numerous partnerships to drive up the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

In its 2030 Targets4, DHL has explicitly set a target of achieving more than 30% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) blending as a key milestone, while positioning sustainability as the company’s ‘fourth bottom line’. DHL will also increase the proportion of electric vehicles in our first and last mile delivery fleet to over 66%.

Insights from Using GoGreen Plus for Low‑Carbon Logistics

Real market demand: Low‑carbon logistics is now a must‑have
Decarbonization is no longer a slogan. More customers are proactively seeking concrete, measurable low‑carbon shipping solutions.

Partnership is essential: SAF supply is limited, but collaboration unlocks scale
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) remains a limited resource, but close cooperation with airlines, fuel suppliers, and customers significantly accelerates adoption and scalability.

Decarbonization is achievable: With the right technology and partners, large‑scale transformation is possible
By combining the right technologies (such as SAF and carbon insetting) with reliable logistics partners, deep decarbonization across the supply chain becomes entirely viable.

Flexibility matters: Sustainability solutions must adapt to different business models
Every company’s supply chain looks different—therefore, decarbonization strategies must remain flexible enough to support large enterprises, SMEs, various shipment volumes, and different market needs.

Transparency builds trust: Verified data and clear reporting are the foundation of sustainability
Carbon‑reduction results must be measurable. Internationally verified data and transparent reporting ensure businesses can disclose and audit their progress with confidence.

Small actions add up: Every choice contributes to global decarbonization
Whether the reduction target is 10%, 30%, or 70%, each decision to choose a more sustainable shipping option helps drive meaningful progress for the industry and the planet.
