In October 2025, Expo City Dubai launched the UAE’s first Green Innovation District, turning the ground that once hosted Expo 2020 into an anchor for the country’s Net Zero 2050 strategy. Weeks later, DHL opened a next-generation Innovation Center and pledged €120 million toward a net-zero-carbon warehouse in the same Dubai South district. From Expo 2020 to Green Innovation District
Expo City Dubai was designed as a 15-minute city built to outlast the exhibition halls it replaced. It forms part of the wider Dubai South masterplan, sitting on the logistics corridor that links Jebel Ali Port with Al Maktoum International Airport. Its Green Innovation District builds on that positioning, drawing clean energy, circular economy and green technology businesses into the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 push. Global brands have already relocated operations there, using the district as an active base for sustainable industrial growth.
Smart Logistics Innovation in Dubai South
DHL Group is building directly into that shift. In December 2025, the company opened a newly expanded Middle East and Africa Innovation Center in Dubai South, one of only four such centers DHL operates worldwide, alongside Cologne, Singapore and Chicago.
Spanning 1,700 square meters, the facility brings customers, startups and academic partners together to trial automation, AI and sustainability solutions before they scale across the region. It is smart logistics infrastructure with a purpose to turn ideas tested in Dubai into tools for supply chains across the MEA region.
Sustainable Warehousing, Designed for Net Zero
Alongside the Innovation Center, DHL Supply Chain is investing in sustainable warehousing in Dubai South: a €120 million, 55,000 square meter multi-user facility on a 96,000 square meter plot, secured on a 38-year lease.
With completion target set for summer 2027, the facility will operate on a net-zero-carbon basis from day one. Positioned close to the future Al Maktoum International Airport, the warehouse is designed to serve multiple sectors while helping customers lower their own environmental footprint through the infrastructure they ship through.

The Innovation Center and warehouse are part of a long-running effort towards clean energy. DHL’s solar investment in Dubai predates both, and it is already producing results. DHL Global Forwarding's partnership with TotalEnergies has already solarized seven of its sites across Dubai, including locations in the Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) and Dubai Airport Freezone (DAFZA). More than 12,000 solar panels now cover roughly 27,000 square meters, generating over 11,000 megawatt hours of electricity each year, enough to meet 80% of those buildings' energy needs.
The impact reaches beyond power generation:
● An estimated 5,000 tonnes of CO₂e saved in the first year, equivalent to planting 119,000 trees
● Solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations installed across the sites
● Direct progress toward DHL Group's target of electrifying 60% of its fleet by 2030
