DHL Express Ireland is proud to announce its sponsorship of Ireland’s Down Syndrome Futsal National team, which will compete in the SUDS European Championships for athletes with Down syndrome. This prestigious event will take place in Ferrara, Italy, from 15 to 21 June 2025. The championships are hosted by the Italian Paralympic Sport Federation for athletes with intellectual or relational disabilities, also known as FISDFIR.
The Futsal national team has already made a significant impact on the international stage, excelling in two events in 2023 against strong opponents such as Italy, Portugal, and Türkiye, followed by a competition against the USA in 2024. These international participations have raised awareness of both the sport and the remarkable talents of Irish players with Down syndrome.
Currently, two major blitzes are held each year, involving 120 male and female players from across Ireland. The selection process for the national team began in 2024, culminating in the announcement of the Ireland National Futsal squad on 11 February, which saw 11 players selected to represent six branches of Down Syndrome Ireland.
The selected players are:

These talented athletes have demonstrated outstanding skill and dedication, and they now have the honour of representing Ireland on the European stage.
As excitement builds and players refine their skills, this opportunity is seen as vital in bringing greater exposure to Futsal for athletes with Down syndrome and other disabilities. The draw for the tournament has placed Ireland in a challenging position, with their first match scheduled against Portugal on Tuesday, 17 June, at 9 AM IST at Palaboschetto, Ferrara.
Cork player Cian Kelleher expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Futsal is fun. I can’t wait to go to Italy and play for Ireland.” His mother, Máire, echoed this sentiment, saying, “What a wonderful opportunity it is for these players to wear their Ireland jerseys. They have worked hard to reach this point, demonstrating skill, determination, and a great sense of camaraderie.”
In preparation for their journey, DHL Express Ireland's Same Day and Commercial Director delivered an inspiring speech to the players, emphasising the importance of teamwork and dedication. Following the speech, the team received essential travel items to support them during their trip, ensuring they are well-equipped for the challenges ahead.
As the players gear up for this exciting competition, DHL Express Ireland stands firmly behind them, celebrating their achievements and the spirit of inclusivity that Futsal represents.
