Shipping to and From the UK With DHL Express

All information about shipping to the United Kingdom (UK)

How to Ship to the UK

As of January 1, 2021, the United Kingdom left the European Customs Union.

This event brought about changes in economic dynamics and trade, including the fact that shipments of goods are subject to customs clearance.

  • Accompanying invoice
Shipments of goods must always be accompanied by a proforma or commercial invoice.
  • Customs duties
According to the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, customs duties do not apply if the goods are of EU or UK preferential origin.
  • Goods origin
The preferential origin of the goods must be specified in the accompanying invoice.
  • Northern Ireland
Shipments of goods to and from Northern Ireland are still considered intra-EU shipments.

Are You Expecting a Shipment From the UK?

If you are expecting a shipment from the UK, consider the following changes brought about by Brexit:

  • To clear your shipment through the Customs, we need your tax information (as importing party): Tax ID for personal consignees or VAT number for companies.
  • You will receive an email and/or SMS from DHL with instructions for submitting your tax information, which is necessary to complete the import process and speed up the delivery of your shipment.
  • Just as for the other non-EU countries, all shipments of goods of any value from the UK are subject to the payment of VAT.
  • DHL pays the amount of VAT to Customs in advance. If customs charges (including VAT) have already been included in the cost of the product you purchased (the with Duty Tax Paid/ DTP option), the shipper is required to pay customs charges.  Otherwise, you can conveniently pay custom charges online before delivery via PayPal or credit card through the DHL dedicated portal. You will receive an email/SMS from DHL notifying you of the amount to be paid and the relevant instructions for payment.
  • According to the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, signed at the end of December 2020, customs duties do not apply if the imported goods are of UK preferential origin (which must be specified in the accompanying invoice).
  • DHL will issue an electronic invoice for the amount of customs duties (if any) and VAT, as provided for by Italian law, providing you with a copy of the invoice.

Are You a DHL Account Customer and Need to Ship to the UK?

From January 1, 2021, VAT (20 percent) is applied to all sales of goods to be shipped to the UK. For the sale of low-value goods (£0 - £135), the amount of VAT must no longer be paid at the time of import, it has to be paid at the time of sale.

You Don't Have a DHL Business Account and Need to Ship to the UK?

For your shipments, take these recommendations into consideration:

  • Check whether your products are classified as goods or documents because different customs rules apply in the two cases.
  • Remember that the goods must always be accompanied by a proforma or commercial invoice in English that must contain an accurate description of the goods (vague descriptions, such as gifts, samples, and spare parts are not allowed).
  • It is advisable to fill in the waybill with the VAT number/taxpayer's code of the sender and the consignee (if available).
