Yes, when the funds enter Brazil. The operation is handled by an institution authorised by the central bank and may be settled promptly, within two business days, or forward, with a term of up to 1,500 days, under Resolução BCB 277/2022.
International payment is how money crosses the border in a trade deal, and there are four usual routes: advance payment, open account, documentary collection and letter of credit. The choice decides who carries the risk, what the operation costs and when the goods actually ship.
If you are opening a trade lane with Brazil, you know the deadlock. The buyer wants the goods before paying, the seller wants the money before shipping, and neither side has a track record with the other. Banking structures exist to break that tie, and they cost less than most people assume.
It is the operation by which a company pays a supplier abroad or receives from a customer abroad. Two layers are involved: the commercial arrangement, which sets when and against what the money is released, and the foreign exchange operation, which converts one currency into another.
On the Brazilian side, the legal base is Law 14,286 of 29 December 2021, the country's foreign exchange framework. Under article 2, operations in the exchange market may be carried out freely, with no value cap, and the rate is freely agreed between the institution and its client. Source: Presidency of the Republic, Law 14,286/2021.
Two practical consequences follow. First, the operation may only be handled by an institution authorised by the Banco Central do Brasil (Brazil's central bank), under article 3. Second, the exchange rate is not fixed by anyone, so it pays to quote with more than one institution before closing, especially on larger amounts.
One responsibility tends to go unnoticed. Article 4 of the law puts the classification of the purpose of the exchange operation on the client, not on the bank. Declaring the wrong purpose is the company's problem, and the bank's duty is to guide, not to guess.
There are four, and they differ in the point where risk changes hands. The table compares them by what matters at the negotiating table: who is exposed, what the bank actually does, and the situation where each one tends to fit.
Method | Who carries the risk | Role of the bank | When it usually fits |
Advance payment | Buyer | Transfers the funds only | Supplier with leverage, made to order production, small amounts |
Open account | Seller | Transfers the funds only | Long standing relationship, parent and subsidiary, proven payer |
Documentary collection | Shared | Holds and releases documents | Relationship being built, cargo with a control document |
Letter of credit | Banks take part of it | Commits to pay | First deal, high value, higher risk market |
None of the four is the best one. They are steps on a ladder of trust: the less the parties know each other, the more banking structure the deal needs, and the more it costs. As the relationship matures, you can step down and save.
The buyer pays before the goods are shipped. The risk sits entirely with them: if the supplier fails to produce, fails to ship or ships something else, the money is already gone. In exchange, it is the simplest method and the one new suppliers like most.
Brazil's central bank sets time limits on that advance. Under Resolução BCB 277 of 31 December 2022, payment for an import may be made up to 360 days before the expected shipment date. Source: Banco Central do Brasil, Resolução BCB 277/2022, article 47.
A much longer window exists for specific cases. The same resolution allows advances of up to 1,800 days for machinery and equipment with a long production cycle or made to order, provided it matches the cycle of the goods, or where the importer can evidence that shipment or clearance was impossible for reasons beyond their control.
If you are going to pay in advance, cut the exposure with three simple moves: split the payment into instalments tied to production milestones, ask for factory photos and a progress report before the final instalment, and write a shipment deadline into the contract. That is negotiation, not bureaucracy.
The seller ships the goods and hands the documents to their bank, which forwards them to the buyer's bank. The buyer only receives the documents, and with them control of the cargo, on payment or acceptance of the draft. The bank handles the paperwork but guarantees nothing.
The international rules for this method sit in URC 522, published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and in force since 1 January 1996. Source: ICC, Uniform Rules for Collections. They standardise what each bank does and does not do, which prevents a great deal of argument when something goes off script.
The blind spot of documentary collection is air freight. In ocean shipping the bill of lading is a document of title: without it, nobody collects the cargo. In air freight the transport document does not carry that nature, so control depends on how the shipment was consigned. Settle that with your carrier before booking.
When it fits: a relationship under construction, with a customer you know by name but not yet by payment history. It costs less than a letter of credit and protects more than open account. Since documents sit at the centre of it, the commercial invoice guide helps you assemble the paperwork without errors.
The buyer's bank commits to paying the seller, provided documents are presented exactly in line with the terms of the credit. The commercial risk of the buyer leaves the equation and the risk of the issuing bank takes its place, which is usually far smaller.
The letter of credit is governed by UCP 600, the ICC publication that gathers the uniform customs and practice for documentary credits. It has been in force since 1 July 2007 and has 39 articles, down from 49 in the previous version. Source: ICC, UCP 600.
Two points in UCP 600 explain how banks behave and save exporters a lot of frustration. First, the bank works with documents, not with goods: if the papers are in order, it pays, even if the cargo has a problem. Second, the examination period is set in sub article 14(b) at a maximum of five banking days following the day of presentation.
The price of that security is operational. Any discrepancy between the documents and the wording of the credit, even a word out of place, suspends payment until the buyer agrees to waive it. A letter of credit rewards whoever reads the credit carefully on the day it arrives, rather than the night before shipment.
It is the operation in which foreign currency is bought or sold through an authorised institution. Under Resolução BCB 277, settlement of a client operation may be prompt, within two business days of contracting, or forward, with a term of up to 1,500 days. Source: Banco Central do Brasil, article 38.
Two deadlines matter for exporters. The exchange operation may be closed before or after shipment. And when settlement happens after shipment, the maximum gap between the two events is 1,500 days, counted from the issue date of the international transport document.
Export proceeds gained flexibility under the current framework. They may enter Brazil in reais or in foreign currency, regardless of the currency of the commercial negotiation, and payment may be received through credit to an account held abroad by an institution authorised to operate in the Brazilian exchange market.
One contractual precaution closes the subject. Once closed, an exchange operation does not allow changes to buyer, seller, foreign currency amount, local currency amount, currency or rate. Check those five fields before confirming, because fixing it afterwards means cancelling, at a cost.
Currency movement between the sale and the payment is a separate subject with its own page: see how foreign exchange risk management works before quoting a long dated price in a foreign currency.
By the size of the loss you can absorb if the other side fails. That is the honest question, and it orders the decision better than any table. From there, four steps settle most cases:
That last point is where most deals go wrong. Selling on advance payment while using an Incoterm that loads every obligation onto the seller is a contract unbalanced on both sides at once. If that part is still unclear, start with the Incoterms guide and come back to the payment decision afterwards. The full selling process sits in the guide to exporting from Brazil.

In documentary collection the bank only holds and releases documents against payment or acceptance, guaranteeing nothing. In a letter of credit the issuing bank commits to paying against compliant documents, which moves the buyer's commercial risk onto a financial institution.
A maximum of five banking days following the day of presentation, under sub article 14(b) of UCP 600, published by the International Chamber of Commerce. If the documents differ from the credit, the bank may refuse the presentation and payment stays suspended until it is resolved.
Yes, and Resolução BCB 277/2022 provides that payment for an export may be received, among other ways, through credit to an account held abroad by an institution authorised to operate in the Brazilian exchange market, at the discretion of the parties.
No. Law 14,286/2021 establishes that the exchange rate is freely agreed between authorised institutions and their clients. Comparing quotes and the total cost of the operation, fees included, changes the outcome noticeably on larger amounts.
Every international payment method leans on documents that exist only because the goods moved. Transport document, invoice, proof of shipment: a delay in the cargo becomes a delay in the cash, and a wrong document becomes a banking discrepancy.
