There is no single date. DHL recommends 3 to 5 business days before the holiday, 5 or more for South America and Africa, and one week for Asia. In December, customs can cause delays, so the first half of the month is the safest period.
To send a Christmas gift abroad from Brazil, you need three things: contents that are allowed to travel, an accurate description and value on the invoice, and time. DHL advises shipping 3 to 5 business days before the holiday, 5 or more for South America and Africa, and one week for Asia. In December, it pays to add a buffer for customs.
If you have a child studying overseas, family in another country or a friend who moved away, you know the scene: the box is ready, and the doubts show up at the counter. Can this go? Will it get there in time? Will the person receiving it have to pay anything? All three questions have an answer before you close the box.
In 2026, Christmas falls on a Friday, and Christmas Eve, December 24, is a reduced working day in much of the world. Count backwards from there. The table shows the minimum lead time DHL recommends for shipments close to holidays.
Destination | Minimum lead time before the holiday | What weighs on December |
North America and Europe | 3 to 5 business days | Clearance queues and a surge in residential deliveries |
South America and Africa | 5 business days or more | Fewer flights and connections |
Asia | One week | Distance and more than one connection |

These lead times are the floor for transport, not a delivery guarantee. Customs clearance in the destination country has no set date, and the last week before Christmas is the busiest of the year. If you can ship in the first half of December, do.
The quote shows the estimated delivery for your route before you pay. The guide to rate quotes and transit times explains how to read that number.
Almost everything that usually becomes a gift can travel: clothes, books, toys, handicrafts, souvenirs and personal items. The care goes into two groups: prohibited items and items that depend on a specific rule.
These never travel with DHL Express, according to the official list:

The annotated list, with examples, is in the guide to products, samples and gifts.
It depends on the destination country, because food enters under the health rules of whoever receives it. A factory-made, sealed and labeled product has a better chance of being accepted than a homemade or perishable item, which is a poor fit for international transport.
In the United States, for example, a person-to-person gift with no commercial purpose is normally not held for lacking prior notice to the FDA, the country's food agency. That does not clear meat or cheese, which follow rules set by the US Department of Agriculture. Source: FDA, December 2024.
Alcoholic drinks change rules from country to country and may require approval. Before you put the hamper together, show the list of what goes inside at a DHL Store (one of DHL's own retail stores in Brazil): the team tells you what can go to that destination.
On an international shipment, the person receiving it may have to pay the destination country's duties and taxes before delivery. That is what the DHL Express Terms and Conditions set out. The rule changes by country, and two destinations account for most of the gifts leaving Brazil.
Destination | Rule in 2026 | What to do |
United States | A genuine person-to-person gift of up to US$ 100 enters without duty. Above that, it pays according to product and origin | Identify it as a gift on the invoice, item by item, with value |
European Union | The exemption for consignments of up to €150 ended on July 1, 2026, and the destination country's VAT is charged | Let the recipient know and check the destination guide |
Other countries | Each customs authority has its own rule | Ask at a DHL Store before you ship |

A gift that comes with a charge at the door loses its charm. To avoid that, DHL Express has an option to bill duties and taxes to the shipper (listed as Reversão de Impostos e Taxas on MyDHL+ Brazil), in which the sender takes on the destination duties and taxes in place of the recipient. The guides to shipping to the United States and shipping to Europe go through each rule in detail.
Precisely, item by item. The description and the value are what customs at destination uses to release the parcel, and "gift" or "clothes" tells an officer nothing.
Declaring a lower value to pay less tax is the worst shortcut. DHL states that an undervalued shipment may be returned to the sender, with the costs falling on whoever shipped it. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil, Terms and Conditions.
For a valuable gift, there is Shipment Value Protection. With it, compensation in case of loss or damage takes the declared value into account, not the standard limit per kilogram. The guide to shipment insurance shows when it is worth adding.
It pays tax. The exemption for consignments between private individuals was revoked on August 1, 2024, and today a gift is taxed on the value declared by the sender: 60% Import Duty plus ICMS, Brazil's state-level tax on goods. It is worth telling the relative who lives abroad before they ship. The guide to import duty exemptions shows what the law still exempts, such as books.
You don't need to arrive with the box sealed or know the rules by heart. This is how it goes at the counter:
There is no single date. DHL recommends 3 to 5 business days before the holiday, 5 or more for South America and Africa, and one week for Asia. In December, customs can cause delays, so the first half of the month is the safest period.
Perfume is classified by DHL as dangerous goods and depends on prior approval. Ask at a DHL Store before you pack.
They may, depending on the destination country's rule. In the United States, a person-to-person gift of up to US$ 100 enters without duty, according to CBP. To keep the bill away from the recipient, the sender can take on the duties and taxes.
For a valuable gift, yes. Without Shipment Value Protection, DHL's liability follows the standard limit per kilogram in the Terms and Conditions. With it, compensation takes the declared value into account.
No. Private individuals ship without an account and without registering, and pay at the counter.
