DTP: you pay the duties so the receiver does not

When shipping from Brazil to Europe, you pick the service by delivery time, prepare a commercial invoice with an accurate description and value, and decide who pays the duties on arrival. With DHL Express, delivery ranges from end of day to before 9 a.m. on the next possible business day, depending on the service and destination.

Whether you are sending a gift to family in Lisbon or selling to customers in Berlin, the same questions come up: which service, which paperwork and how much the person on the other side will pay. The European Union changed its rules in 2026, and that affects the final price. The good news is that almost everything depends on information you control.

Which service should you use to ship from Brazil to Europe?

It depends on when the parcel needs to arrive. DHL Express offers three time definite export options, all door to door. Express Worldwide delivers by the end of the next possible business day. Express 12:00 delivers before noon, and Express 9:00 before 9 a.m., designed for documents that must reach the main European cities first thing in the morning.

The table summarises what each service accepts, according to the DHL Express 2026 Service and Rate Guide for Brazil.

The "next possible business day" depends on the route: for some cities it is the following day, for others it may be the second business day. If timing is what matters, choose the service by delivery time, not only by price.

What documents do you need to ship from Brazil to Europe?

A courier export from Brazil needs three documents. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil, clearance types, September 2026.

  • The waybill (shipping label), showing the sender's CPF or CNPJ (Brazilian individual or company tax ID).
  • An export invoice (nota fiscal) or, for senders exempt from issuing one, a substitute declaration.
  • A commercial or pro forma invoice.

The courier mode covers shipments with a customs value of up to US$ 1,000, usually small volumes without a commercial purpose. Above that, the export must be formal, with a DU-E (Brazil's single export declaration), a packing list and a signed commercial invoice. In that case, DHL itself can handle the export clearance. The document that prevents most problems is the commercial invoice. It must say what the product is, what it is made of, how many units and the real value. The commercial invoice guide goes through it field by field.

What changed in the European Union rules in 2026?

Since July 1, 2026, the EU has ended the customs duty exemption for consignments worth up to 150 euros. Instead, each item in the order pays a flat 3 euro duty until July 1, 2028. Source: DHL Discover Brazil, EU customs reform guide, September 2026.

"Item" here does not mean each unit but each different tariff classification in the box. Three identical T-shirts count as one item; a T-shirt and a cap count as two. The EU also plans a handling fee on small parcels by November 1, 2026, with the amount still to be set.

VAT is a separate matter: it has been charged since 2021, and distance sellers can collect it upfront through IOSS, the EU's import one stop shop.

Who pays the duties when the parcel arrives in Europe?

As a rule, the receiver pays before delivery. If the receiver does not pay, the shipper may be charged the amounts due. Source: DHL Express Terms and Conditions, September 2026.

If you do not want the person on the other side to be surprised at the door, there is the Duties and Taxes Paid (DTP) service. With it, destination duties are invoiced to you after shipping. In the DHL Express 2026 Service and Rate Guide for Brazil, the DTP fee is US$ 21 per waybill or 2% of duties and taxes, whichever is higher.

For anyone selling to European consumers, this model tends to reduce refused parcels, because the customer receives the order with nothing to pay on delivery.

How can you protect a parcel on its way to Europe?

By adding value protection. Without it, DHL's liability is limited by weight, about US$ 35 per kilogram for air transport. With it, compensation is based on the declared value. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil Terms and Conditions and Optional Services, September 2026.

For international shipments, protection costs 1% of the declared value, with a minimum of US$ 16. For documents that are hard to replace, such as a passport or a certificate, there is Document Protection for US$ 6.50.

Is there a discount for shipping from Brazil to Europe?

Yes. DHL stores in Brazil often run special conditions for shipments to Europe, and the store team confirms at the counter which campaign applies to your shipment that day. Current codes are listed on the DHL discount code page.

Prefer to do it online? On MyDHL+, the CLICK15 code gives 15% off international shipments booked on the website, valid until 31 December 2026. Check the code's conditions when you complete the booking.

How do you ship to Europe from a DHL store in Brazil?

The simplest way is to take the parcel to a store. The team handles the parts that usually take time:

  1. Bring what you want to send, with no appointment and no account needed.
  2. The store supplies the packaging and packs the parcel.
  3. The consultants prepare the shipping documents with the information you give them.
  4. You see the price and delivery time before you confirm.
  5. The shipment travels with full tracking until delivery in Europe.
