What can you send with DHL from Brazil? Products, samples and gifts, within Brazil and abroad, as long as the contents are not on the prohibited items list and the description and value are correct. At a DHL store in Brazil, the team checks what goes inside, packs it and prepares the paperwork with you before the shipment leaves.

Anyone who walks up to the counter with a bag of gifts for family overseas, or with a first sample for a foreign client, tends to ask the same thing: can this travel? In most cases, yes. What changes is the care some product types need, and that is exactly what the store is there for.

What do people usually send from a DHL store?

Day to day, counter shipments fall into three groups, each with a different need.

  • Gifts for people living elsewhere: clothes, books, handicrafts, souvenirs and personal items for family and friends abroad or in another Brazilian city.
  • Commercial samples: parts, prototypes, fabrics, catalogues and test products sent to a client, distributor or partner before a deal closes.
  • Small business products: orders from people who sell online or through social media and ship to customers in Brazil and abroad.

The logic is the same in all three. DHL Express needs to know what is inside, what it is worth and where it is going. With that, the team recommends the right service, packaging and documents.

Which service fits each shipment?

It depends on size and weight. DHL Express Brazil publishes the limits of each service on its Delivery Services page, and the table below sums up the ones you see most at the counter.

What will DHL never accept?

DHL Express keeps a list of prohibited items that do not travel under any circumstances. On the official MyDHL+ Brazil page, the list includes:

  • live animals, hunting trophies and parts of protected animals;
  • cash, such as bank notes and coins;
  • loose precious and semi-precious stones and precious metal bullion;
  • firearms, ammunition, explosives and replica weapons;
  • illegal drugs;
  • counterfeit goods that infringe intellectual property rights;
  • human remains or ashes.

The counterfeit rule matters for branded gifts. DHL itself warns that shoes, clothing, bags, expensive watches, perfumes and electronics are among the most counterfeited items, and that where receiving fakes is illegal, customs seizes the goods and penalises the recipient.

Which products need extra care before shipping?

Some items can travel, but only with DHL's prior approval or under specific rules. These are restricted items. The ones that show up most often in gifts and samples are:

  • Perfume, aftershave and aerosol sprays: DHL classifies them as dangerous goods, which require prior approval.
  • Mobile phones, laptops and tablets: lithium batteries follow their own air transport rules.
  • Power banks: they count as loose batteries, which also follow dangerous goods rules.
  • Artwork and antiques: only with a prior written agreement with DHL.
  • High-value jewellery, watches and collectibles: they depend on prior agreement, according to value.
  • E-cigarettes and accessories: they require DHL Express approval.

For electronics with an installed battery, DHL's lithium battery page gives a practical example: a shipment of two pieces, one with a laptop and the other with two phones, is accepted. If a gift has a battery, the guide on how to ship batteries explains the types and rules in detail.

How does the DHL store handle the shipment for you?

The store exists so you do not have to memorise the restrictions list. The path at the counter is simple:

  1. You show what you are sending and say who it is for and where it is going.
  2. The team checks whether the contents can travel and whether they need special care.
  3. The store packs the parcel in the DHL packaging that suits its size and weight.
  4. The paperwork is prepared with the details you provide, and you see price and transit time before you confirm.
  5. You get a tracking number and follow the shipment until delivery.

In its Terms and Conditions of Carriage, DHL states that it may complete documents on the shipper's behalf in order to provide the service. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil, Terms and Conditions, September 2026.

Why describe contents and value accurately?

Because description and value are what destination customs use to clear the parcel. Under the Terms and Conditions, the shipper warrants that the information about the goods, including value and description, is true, complete and correct.

DHL also states that a shipment undervalued for customs purposes may be returned to the shipper, at the shipper's cost. This applies to gifts and samples alike: even with no sale, the item has a value and must be declared.

A vague description such as "gift" or "clothes" slows clearance. Something specific works better, like "cotton T-shirt, 2 units". The commercial invoice guide shows how these details appear on the export document.

Who pays duties and taxes at destination?

On international shipments, the recipient may have to pay the destination country's duties and charges before delivery, according to that country's rules. That is what the DHL Express Terms and Conditions provide. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil, Terms and Conditions, September 2026.

It is worth agreeing this with the recipient, especially for a gift. If you ship to the United States, the guide on shipping from Brazil to the US explains what happens on arrival.

How do you protect a valuable product or gift?

With Shipment Value Protection, DHL Express's optional cover. Without it, DHL's liability follows the standard per kilo limit set in the Terms and Conditions. With it, compensation is based on the declared value of the parcel in case of loss or physical damage.

The guide on shipment insurance in Brazil shows what it costs and when it pays off.
