To send documents from Brazil with DHL Express, you drop them off at a DHL Store or book a pickup, and they travel door to door to more than 220 countries and territories with a tracking number. Documents do not need a commercial invoice, and you can add extra protection and time definite delivery.

A passport with a visa, a certificate for a citizenship application, a contract that needs a signature on the other side of the world: these papers are hard to replace and usually come with a deadline. What you need to know is simple: how to send them safely, without red tape, and always know where they are.

What documents can you send with DHL Express?

Documents that DHL Stores in Brazil handle include:

  • Passports and visa applications.
  • Official certificates, such as those used in foreign citizenship applications.
  • Contracts that need an original signature.
  • Bank documents and company paperwork.

Acceptance rules can change depending on the destination country and local laws. That is why DHL advises checking the prohibited and restricted items list on MyDHL+ before shipping, and the store team runs that check with you. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil, What Can I Ship?, September 2026.

Do documents need a commercial invoice?

No. Every DHL Express shipment carries a waybill, the shipping document with a unique number that lets you track it from pickup to delivery. A commercial invoice is mandatory for international shipments of goods: anything that is not a document. Source: DHL Express Service and Rate Guide 2026, Brazil.

That makes sending paperwork much simpler. At a DHL Store, the team fills in the waybill with the details you provide: sender, recipient, full address and the recipient's phone number. If you send a product together with the documents, a commercial invoice is needed, and the store takes care of that too.

Which service should you choose for documents?

It depends on when the document has to arrive. The table sums up the export options DHL Express Brazil published for 2026.

The "next possible business day" depends on the route: for some destinations it is the following day, for others it may be the second day. DHL describes Express 9:00 as ideal for documents that must reach major European cities first thing in the morning, for example to sign a contract that same day. How do you protect a document that is hard to replace?

With Document Protection, an optional service that extends DHL's standard liability for valuable documents such as passports, visa applications or certificates. It pays a fixed reimbursement of R$ 2,500.00 in the rare case of total or partial physical loss of the documents. Source: DHL Express Service and Rate Guide 2026, Brazil.

The cost is a flat fee per shipment: US$ 6.50 for international shipments and R$ 31.00 within Brazil. Source: MyDHL+ Brazil, Optional Services, September 2026.

For sensitive documents there is also Adult Signature: DHL delivers only to the recipient, an authorized representative or a responsible adult, and does not redirect the shipment to another address. It costs US$ 6.50 per international shipment and R$ 32.00 domestically. Source: DHL Express Service and Rate Guide 2026, Brazil.

If you also send valuable items with your papers, the option is insurance based on declared value. The differences are explained in the guide to shipment insurance in Brazil.

Can you send documents within Brazil?

Yes. DHL Express domestic services carry documents and goods within Brazil, with end of day delivery to more than 3,000 cities that account for 90% of Brazil's GDP. Time definite delivery at 9:00 and 12:00 is also available domestically, depending on the route. Source: DHL Express Service and Rate Guide 2026, Brazil.

Time definite delivery costs, per domestic shipment, R$ 170.00 for 9:00 and R$ 34.50 for 12:00. Internationally, it costs US$ 34.00 for 9:00, US$ 14.00 for 10:30 and US$ 7.00 for 12:00. Source: DHL Express Service and Rate Guide 2026, Brazil.

How do you send documents at a DHL Store, step by step?

The process is short, and you do not need an account or to fill in anything on your own:

  1. Gather the documents and the recipient's full details: name, address and phone number.
  2. Go to the nearest DHL Store or message the store on WhatsApp first with any questions.
  3. The team places the papers in a DHL document envelope and prepares the waybill.
  4. You choose the service based on urgency and decide whether to add Document Protection or Adult Signature.
  5. You pay and receive the tracking number to follow the shipment until delivery.

No time to visit a store? DHL can also collect the shipment from your address. See how to book a courier pickup.

What if the document does not arrive as expected?

First, follow the tracking with the waybill number. If there is loss or damage, the claim must be made in writing to DHL within 30 days from the date DHL accepted the shipment. Source: DHL Express Terms and Conditions of Carriage, MyDHL+ Brazil, September 2026.

So keep your shipping receipt and, before sending, make a simple copy of the documents. If the shipment has Document Protection, reimbursement follows the fixed amount set by the service. If you are new to shipping abroad, the guide to the basics of international shipping covers the rest of the process.
